Here's my dilema, i need to book a mehtod of travel from dover to france, my options are:

Ferry - Dover to Calais -£23

Ferry - Dover to Dunkirk - £30

Eurotunnel - £44

I was thinking eurotunnel is easier but it is worth the extra? Then i thought if i go dover - - dunkirk i'm 30 miles closer to to my destination for the night (Brussels) when i arrive in France

Optinions / experience?

thanks

Dean

Not trying to sound like a know-it-all but I'm assuming it must be by bike unless he's posted in the wrong section.

If you're going by car, why not just get a flight? Wink

If you're going touring you want as low a price as possible surely. Also would depend on what time you'd be setting off and if getting there quicker would really benefit you.

Personally I'd take the boat...just because I like standing up on deck and gobbing in the sea. Laughing Embarassed I mean watching the sea...

Yes on a bike. Smile

Anyone done the dover to dunkirk route?

It takes half an hour more than to calais.....but then its 30 miles closer to brussels so long as it is short.

Eurotunnel, of course.

Reasons:

Arrow More crossings, sometimes as often as twice an hour.
Arrow Not affected by weather and rough seas.
Arrow If you miss your train, they'll usually throw you in the next one free of charge.
Arrow Takes just half an hour to cross the Channel.

Also no worrying as to whether your bike is safely strapped down, you can sit on it most of the time.

I will NEVER again use the shower of shite P&O as long as i have a hole in my ass.
My Blackbird was put on the outer deck along with 5 others on the return from Calais 3 yrs ago, it was covered in a fine mist of salty water and it caused £££££ worth of damage by the time i got home to wash it. P&O denied any issues and pretty much said i was to take legal action if i wanted it putting right. Middle Finger Crying or Very sad Middle Finger

Seafrance have let me on a later boat for free when I missed my booked ferry by about 2 hours.

I'd take the ferry everytime. For a start it makes the trip into an "event", I always get a buzz from taking my bike on board a ship about to set sail for a far off land. The time spent onboard isn't really a problem as there's plenty of useful things you could be doing:
Arrow Sleeping
Arrow Planning your route for when you get off the boat
Arrow Talking to other bikers (great way to make new friends)
Arrow Eating your lunch.

Who worries about their bike coming off the stand? For the ferry journey from Italy to Greece I had just a chock under my footrest to stop the bike falling off the sidestand.

I would actually consider this to be one of the safest methods of securing a motorcycle on a seafairing boat.

You get cheapest prices by booking as far in advance as possible but so long as there's spaces you'll be ok turning up on the day.

Dunno what other ferry companies are like but with cal mac before I just phoned up and they booked us 2 places without me even having to give card details, then a few hours before the sailing we had to change over to the next ferry which was just one short easy phonecall.

Also as someone else said, I personally love getting a ferry, it's one thing going for a long ride to somewhere but something else to get a ferry there!

I'd opt for the tunnel. I've used it twice and it's great.

Bike stays with you and you're only stopped moving for about 30-45 mins in total with queing to get on and the actualy crossing.

It's not strapped down

There's no salty water to spray onto your bike.

As for the Dunkirk crossing being 30 miles closer. I've ridden from Calais to Dunkirk, last time I went last June, it takes less than half an hour to get there anyway, so it's not adding that muchto your trip.

Tunnel option for me! Thumbs Up

Ferry for me too Thumbs Up

There's no need to worry about the bike, usually they have you park it up against a wall and you can watch/help them strap it down well. Its worth it just to go on deck and watch the cliffs of dover disappear.

When I had to do Dover to Calais I asked a couple of HGV driver's I know (who've done that crossing more times than they can remember) what they thought and they said 'take the ferry'. That was good enough for me.

Agree with that. Went to Skye and got the ferry there. Partly because the ride to the port at Mallaig is quite good Very Happy

However, my neighbours go to France quite often. Having done the ferry and the tunnel their view is choose the tunnel. It's quicker, cleaner, safer (less chance of damage) and easier at either end. The pros outweigh any cons.

Basically, it comes down to what you want:

If you want to get across as quickly as possible in a clean, efficient, basically hassle free, but wildly uninteresting crossing, go with the Tunnel.

If you want the journey to be an enjoyable part of the trip, where you'll meet people, see England disappearing and France approaching, and generally get the feeling that your trip has begun, and you're willing to undertake the extra hassle, then take the ferry.

I would personally take the ferry every time. It's a part of the holiday that you can enjoy, whereas the Tunnel is just sitting on a dark and fairly uncomfortable train waiting for France to arrive.

Ferry for me - same reasons as most here, seems like the start of the holiday as you watch the white cliffs disappear, have a fry-up, a few smokes (can't do that on the tunnel), and the juvenile excitement as France arrives.
Also, you can pretend to be a pirate on the ferry and wander around muttering 'aaaah, Jim lad, oooh me hearties, shiver me timbers' etc. Whilst you can do that on the tunnel, it doesn't have the same effect.
Pirates FTW, ninjas are soooooo last year.

I've been over Dover/Calais on several occasions and never had any probs with the bike. Also through the tunnel with the car, but can't recall seeing any bikes on the train.

i recall it being mentioned that there are a lot of spped cameras, both mobile and fixed around calais. I'm deicded on the ferry but i think i'm going to opt for the dover to dunkirk option, as i imagine it'll be quicker off it as everyne goes to calais? decisions decisions

I wouldn't worry too much about the speed cameras or mobile traps in France, it's (thankfully)different from over here.
The fixed cameras have several big orange signs well in advance of the camera saying (from memory) 'Pour votre securite' and showing a picture of a car and bike - then the camera comes up. In the UK you get massive stretches of road with speed camera sign warnings, but the cameras could be anywhere along that stretch of road (usually at the bottom of a hill or other deliberate sites that have nothing to do with 'safety' and IMHO are all about the money!). In France, once you've passed the camera, there won't be another till the next sign.
The Frenchies are very good at letting you know if there is a mobile trap ahead - most oncoming motorists will flash their lights at you to let you know.
Bon voyage!
