Services for transporting a bike by van?

Anyone know a cheap and good company for tranporting a bike from London to Central Scotland? What sort of price would you expect to pay? I've only tried one place so far and they quoted me £300.

I want to get a bike from down there as there's next to none available up here. Most of them are pretty cheap but the £300 for sending it in a van is nearly half the bike's value.

I could ride it back up but I don't fancy it in February. One of the bikes I'm looking at doesn't have an MOT so I couldn't ride that back.

I gave a bike to RD_Bikes who lives up in Scotland, thats 300 miles from me. He was quoted and paid £100.

Im not sure but i think he said £200 from London to Scotland. I'll try find out.

THere quite a few companies on ebay that do it quite cheap if you dont mind a week or 2 wait. Done on a multiply load basis.

Why not just hire a van and do it yourself?

Average price to hire a Transit (or similar) is £70 (ish) for the weekend.

We use www.learner-rider.co.uk (or is that .com?) and they are very good. Well kitted out van, professional and prompt service and Jeremy is a genuinly nice bloke to boot. I'd guess around £200 for that trip.

Take the train or get a lift to the bike, push it a few hundread meters from the last owners house, take the HT leads off and call out the AA to take you and your new bike home.

It's a shame you're not a hot bird.. I'm sure loads of us would offer to ride it up there for a ride, if you get what I'm saying Wink

Otherwise, your best bet is to surely catch a night coach down to London and ride it back.. You'll be fine!

Also, if you book it in for the MoT on the same day, if you get stopped just say you're riding it to the test station (the fact it's in Scotland and you're several hundred miles away might be a factor, but shh).
