In fairness it was at 8am and there was a chance he didn't see the lights due to low sun/glare

IMO level crossings without barriers are deathtraps.

Maybe he didn't see the lights but how can you miss a bloody great train Laughing

Agreed with the barrier thing though, they really are dangerous without 'em.

The crossings are designed so you can't see up the track. By the time he'd seen the train he was already a goner

Check out https://www.stv.tv/content/news/main/display.html?id=opencms:/news/Teenager_killed_as_train_hits_car_at_level_crossing , there's a vid on there too

IMO level crossings without barriers are deathtraps.

so while approaching a "deadly" hazard while dazzled by the low sun,its ok to just carry on at the same speed and not slow down a touch and double check the lights and perhaps listen for the siren?
we have a few local single barrier level crossings and deaths are not regular but there have been a few in the last 10 years.all were people ignoring the barrier and lights and trying to go round.
joe public dosnt see danger and this driver has probably gon across the railway many times before.
simple rule of thumb. flashing red lights with a siren when approaching a train line, show some caution!

TBH not even sure if the remote crossings like that even have sirens. I'm generally a careful rider/driver and know to take extreme caution at level crossings.

But we don't know the story here. For all we know he might have travelled that route everyday thus getting an idea when the trains are, luring him into a false sense of security. So if the train was a few minutes early/late and he's going a bit too fast then smash

totally agree

its the driver of the car's responsibility to make sure he follows the rules - the train cant swerve!!!!!

the driver needs to be sure the lights are not on if he is gonna cross.

dont really see the point in going round a barrier (if there is some)

some people are thick as concrete and it serves them right - its bloody common sense that a 5 year old has and these thick twats choose not to use it.

The kid got his licence the week before.
Many thousands of people a year do not drive on to the crossing when the lights show but he did.
Do the maths.

People make mistakes. This one cost the kid his life. Familes have been broken apart by this. It's not the time nor the place for getting on high horses.

Tell you what... why not kick around outside the funeral and tell the family their kid was a shit driver? That'll help.

It is interesting to note that the car ran into the train, not the other way round. This suggests to me that the forward visability in this situation was seriously impaired.

I too have seen these crossings under a low sun where you can barely make out the lights, or even see there is a level crossing coming up for that matter. They often only have the one sign on the approach and these can be so shit-up they are illegible at the best of times. They are also often located just round a bend in the road. I've hit one on the bike before and gone:

"Shit, I'm on a railway line, didn't see that coming!". As the arse slides out a bit on the metal track. They're a hazard for a bike even if there isn't a train coming.

The bloody things should have gates up or even something as simple as a chicaine or sleeping policemen on the approach to them. The fact is, you can't always see them coming up.

I dont want to turn this into a 'you crossed the line' post thus im not going to mention any names. But i must say some of the comments made with regards to the crash were quite austere. I believe many comments have been based on mis-informed judgements due to the lack of details of the crash.
If thats your opinion your entitled to it but maybe just some reconsideration on what your actually saying?

Didnt really say my peice earlier, but to be honest im agreeing with TobyR on this one that half you have no soul. I could understand if they were uninsured or stolen, but they seem so innocent, and thats what gets to me. Some people made harsh comments in the other thread about people dying by having 3 on the bike, which was understandable to a certain extent, due to it being illegal.

just my piece. Thumbs Up

Just heard on the news that one of the others that was in the car, also 17, has died. Turns out though that the 2 dead were the 2 passengers, the driver is still in hospital Shocked
