Any strong riders here? , so how long does it take to get to the level of Ham Hock man?

I encounter this guy daily on my commute he even says hello sometimes , on the flat
he can sit @ 30/35mph and pace me (according to my speedo). I of course have an
engine and can leave him to eat me dust. Seems pretty impressive, since I see him
arrive at the office across the road about 15 minutes after I'm sat at me desk.

But then he does have the advantage of being able to filter into the tiniest of gaps and
to disobey traffic laws, I'm not sure if he skitches either.

I'm thinking of the next time me bike throws a wobbler and I'm left transportless, although
I do have a car , theres nowhere to park it lest I wanna pay £16 and take an hour to get in.
And every bugger borrows it namely as its always got petrol in it.

Though there is the small matter of the enourmous hill @ Standlane abour 25-35 degrees
from flat 1.5 miles,(the bike will do a steady 34mph down that hill in neutral) after that there
are small inclines nothing to be too worried about.

When I was a school boy I could ride that hill daily, and be ok though I did have a trick bike
at the time , grip shifters disc brakes, alu frame and titanium seat post, today I realised my lack
of fitness when bumping the bike for the 17th time and failing miserably. Jumping onto a
push bike and doing 10 miles and feeling a little achy and tired.

(maybe I should keep a spare £500 monkey bike for such eventualities of transport
probs)

Oh that and the minor fact that the 3 girlies at the office all cycle into work , and are very tasty.

Any thoughts?

Ta

Cycle to work it will be good for you. I'd expect you would sit at an average speed of 12-14mph for the first month or two, then depending on how well you adapt up the average speed to 15mph fairly quickly, getting up to and holding 18-19mph is a bit of a struggle but around 6 month's if your cycling daily, perhaps less.

Anyone who can maintain an average speed on the flat in still conditions of over 22mph is at least at club level racing.

10 miles on the flat depending on traffic will take anywhere between 45mins to an hour for someone who isnt in shape. A good person around 40, someone who has been cycling for a while and going for it around 25-30 minutes.

Only way to get quicker is to do the ride. The guy you mention has probably cycled daily for the last few years and covers at least a couple of hundred miles a week. He wouldnt be able to hold that speed for a long time, longer than you or I but not for hours on the flat.

Ye, one thing i dont understand is why the majority of cyclist obey traffic laws? Confused

When im out on the bike, filter threw cars, jump on the footpath, cut red lights (when its safe)....always keep the bike moving, think thats an advantage of having a non motored road 'vehicle' - that you dont have to follow any laws.

There was one time tho when i police men told me to ride on the road..but i jus said to him ....umm..."no"

i use to cycle alot as a hobby and to and from work...work was 6miles away, was a pain having to get changed in the toilets before start tho.

also found if you wear a backpack, your back gets really sweaty. and i wasnt really for getting those gay bags that u attach to rear wheel.

we were playing football once and my brother turned round to and said my calfs have gotten much bigger..and i noticed my thighs had become alot more toned aswell... this was jus a couple months after i got into cycling.. so i would recommend it..done alot of good for me....they say its one of the best sort of exercises you can do... it will help your back aswell for the motorbiking.

how many miles away is work for you itchy?

hmm interesting , but as I've said previously the route isn't flat its a steep climb followed by a long steep climb and a shallow hill all the way into mancs,

Try doing that in a big city and see how far you get. Al lest round here there are cycling policemen, who will stop you and fine you £30 on the spot for breking traffic laws.

I've been thinking about getting myself a cheap push bike 'n' all. Since I would only be riding about 4 miles to work and back and not doing any off road at all, would one of those £80 bikes they sell at Halfrauds do? Or are they real pieces of shoite that would fall apart if I hit a pot hole?

Edit - Oo, and are cycle helmets a legal requirement these days? I don't really want to wear one if I can avoid it (I'd sooner bash my noggin in than look gay)
