I dont need a car.
If i were to get a car, id get something that was the opposite of a bike. Something that completely insulated you from the outside world.

I like the idea of having one of these big old 7 series bmw, audi a8, or similar that have double glazed windows.

I probably wont get one, but Im curious about servicing costs.

i guess there may be forums on each brand.

Has anyone ran one of these big old boats without problems ?

Has anyone bought one and then faced massive servicing costs and just decided to get rid ?

The servicing depends on what engine it's got, and the big cars have big engines. the 7 series start at a 730 I think, 3 litre. Can't imagine engine servicing is anything special, but they're crammed with electrics just waiting to go wrong, that's what'll cost you. And old tired suspension, rusty panels, arches etc etc. And seeing as you've never owned a car or insured one, you might want to get an insurance quote first.

I`ve looked at a few jags on there. Enginewise, generally they`re bulletproof. However, you`ve got to be careful. The fuel costs would probably cripple me!

Few people i know have had Omega's in all varieties I.E Petrol, Diesel. Auto, Manual and ive driven them and been a passenger and ive never been in a more sofa like car. Made me wanna get a duvet and sleep its that comfy

I'd strongly suggest a Toyota Camry. Very comfy, very big, very heavy and ultimately extremely reliable.

The V6 version is quick enough too, but I doubt you'll find one cheap cos they all go to MR2 owners who nick the engine and put it in their '2.

The Camry being a toyota though, is extraordinarily reliable. The v6 ones can go up to 300,000 miles, and the guy who does a lot of the MR2 conversions says he stripped down a 200,000 miler and it still had the honing marks on the bores!

If you want the opposite to a bike, I'd suggest a 2.5l V6 camry. There are 3.0ls available, but as I said, they are all being nabbed by MR2 owners.

{edit} Oh yeah, and I've seen the 2.5l V6's go for £300 on ebay with 12months MOT... {edit}

for me, i wdnt use it enough for the fuel bill to be very big. As Pheonix mentioned, the killer would be the insurance, but as the profile of people who drives those cars might be low risk, it might not be a lot more than for the cars that learner drivers usually get.

I really do need to get some quotes. If they are too high, I'll save it for when im older and have kids.

Last time i got car quotes, i found that although it would cost me £800 to insure a fiesta, it would cost £1000 to insure an mr2. This might be an age thing. I cant insure any car cheaply, but quotes dont go up a lot for higher risk cars, as im a lower risk driver being older.

I have also had the omega experience (someone drove me about 100miles) so I agree with resurrection. Much more pleasamt than the cars i was used to riding in.

I guess if i went for the premium brands it would be for the image, but just for the drive, the normal brands flagships would be good.

A mate's just bought a BMW 528, 1997 P, 74K miles, for £2300, electric everything, Auto gearbox, 100 Mph at 2500 RPM. Leather, CD changer, bargain. If your looking for a sofa, can't go far wrong with one of those. Old enough for regular garages to have experience with and fix without dealer prices. It will easily triple that mileage without much grief.

Mate of mine used to ride his bikes to work in the summer and buy what he calls a "luxobarge" for the winter. As I recall, his last one was an early 80's Bently with about 200,000 miles on it (nothing for a massive engine like that, you can virtually garauntee it has never been ragged about the place) which he bought for a couple of grand. He even made a profit when he sold it in the spring.

Apparently used to wind his boss up something chronic when he saw his employee turing up for work in a Bently.

Careful of the old Jags though, my old man had an early nineties one I think and it was a bit of a shitter tbh, reverse gear didn't work, crap fuel consumption, dodgy electrics etc.-no end of problems.

Car insurance is very odd indeed. I'm 24, have passed my test just over 12 months but I've got 0 no-claims. I can insure a 155bhp 2.0l Alfa Romeo 145 for £20 more than a 1.0l Micra. Odd.

yeah i think its about the type of drivers that buy particular cars.

Insurance prices follow the same pricing curve for everyone. When I was insuring cars I got quotes on absolutely everything to see what was cheapest and some of the bigger cars were cheaper to insure than small ones, even non boy racer cars, like a Ford Ka or a Pug 306 diesel.

After having a 325 TDS I decided to look at big exec cars like the 5 series, Omega and Volvos and they were often cheaper to insure than the beemer. In the end I went for V70 T5 complete with 250bhp for £200 LESS than the 140bhp bmw. The 535 was cheaper too, only the 540 started getting expensive. They're old mans cars is the main thing, crammed with safety devices too, and most are virtually impossible to steal.

Insuring a car, any car, is expensive, upgrading isn't really from that initial premium.
