 |
|
I went to my friends house last night, I stayed late playing Xbox and then made my way home.
It’s quite a trip so I had time to think about the day, I have no idea why, but I started thinking about the Carbon emissions, perhaps to do with the 2strokey smell coming from my bike……
As I left the small village I noticed the old peoples home, there was absolutely no one in the rooms I could see downstairs. I could see into the living room area where they all rot and watch TV and all of the lights were on. I’m not talking about a few lamps to illuminate the room, this is every bloody light fitting possible, I think perhaps some were strip lights.
It was about 1am and none of them were up and about, but I thought if they did want to go in there they could use the light switch.
I have noticed this before, it’s not uncommon to see a furniture shop for example, with a large floor area, illuminated 24 hours.
Some shops have displays, and I can only assume the lights are left on in the town centre so people can window shop all night.
I could count the amount of light fitting in my place on two hands, and at anyone time I’d guess about 3-4 are on. And yes they are all energy saving fittings, thanks to my landlord. I think it is such a simple thing to do at night, switch everything off, go to bed, and even when you are using stuff, switch it off when you leave the room.
This is such an easy thing to do, just switch them off, save energy, cut emissions.
I read somewhere ages ago that Americans leave their TV’s on standby at night and this causes millions of pounds worth lost in energy, so shops really should be getting on this now.

I don't really believe we can do anything in Global warming , the UK being pretty insignificant , what I don't like is waste.
But then we are a wasteful nation , and free choice and THEM paying for the leccy = we generally ignore it,
government can do some stuff though , in Holland V who used to live there , said that after about 11pm 1 out of every 2 street lights goes out , on the motorway it varies somestimes every other street light sometimes 4/5 go out on the motorway.
pretty hypocritical since the government leaves its office lights on all day everyday my office we even have to turn things off standby.
(I reckon a good idea is with every tax disc sold in the UK a free tyre pressure gauage and foot pump should be given out , the number of cars with underinflated tyres is shocking , my sister drove around in MY car on 8 when it was supposed to be nearer 40).
there is also the problem of voting makes no difference , if everybody thought that way, x1 60watt bulb = 60 watts = 16.5 hours to use 1 kilo watt = pennies , people don't fact in the cost that 60 million others in the country think the same thing
ie 60watts x 60,000,000 = 3600000000 watts , which could close down several power stations.
I do turn everything off though , only thing running in my place is the fridge (which isn't empty) and my alarm clock. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. no I believe a technical solution rather than a social one will be found,
mirrors in space, even better gigantic solar heliostats to generate electricity on earth based reactors.
an artificial dyson cluster of dust to reduce the albedo effect.
AOL trial CDs on house roofing = increase in albedo effect = less heat absorbed,
Or just dump several millions of tons of rust into the sea , this makes algae go nuts kills all the fish but absorbs millions of tons of C02 .
If all my green taxes were used to make those things happen , I'd be happier but they aren't they are spent on general tax things instead. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. Hi
Personally think the whole "standby" thing is a bit OTT. Yes there are some units that do not power down much at all, but it is quite easy to produce something that has negligable power consumption when in standby mode. And plenty do.
However, suspect that doesn't apply to a £9.95 DVD player from a supermarket. But there are more problems there because you can be certain that such a cheap unit is not going to last long (and at £10 nobody cares).
How many people unplug their mobile phone charger when it is not being used? How many fully power down their PC?
All the best

I turn the socket off when I power my pc down. I noticed when I left it on there was blue light coming from various sources. Seeing as we have 2 pcs and 2 printers, not to mention the router, speakers etc I decided to shut em all off completely at night.
Mobile phone charger is unplugged as soon as phone is charged up. Guilty of leaving the tv on standby tho. |

No need to laugh, Jamie's right for most cases.
The lights in my office are left on all night so that the CCTV cameras can see. ____________________ <Simple> no I'm shaven Jon

I stick my electronics clusters, PC, TV & DVD etc, on a surge protected multiplug.
Can then turn the power off straight from that, which I do.
Dunno how much difference it makes at the end of the day, but otherwise its just wasted power/cash.
Mobile phone charger is the one I keep forgetting though :/ ____________________ I, as a responsible adult human being, will never concede the power to anyone to regulate my choice of what I put into my body, or where I go with my mind. Frog we can and we have, there is a system called Carbon Storage/ Clean coal , actually I tell a lie
Holland invented it , but indirectly,
they have this gas field right , thing is it gives off town gas , and it burns dirty , so they have
a vortex pump which separates the methane from the rest of the chaff, and they pump the
dirty stuff down a previously emptied gas well.
It works , but will increase the cost per kwh by 5p , and the UK is IDEAL for it due to the drying
oil fields, but Blair is in the pocket of the nuclear industry, and thus dismissed it.
Since business want profits , a 5p per kwh increase to somewhere like China were costs are rock bottom
is unacceptable. ____________________ Spain 2008France 2007Big one 2009 We all die. The goal isn't to live forever, the goal is to create something that will. In the end, your life will flash before your eyes. Make sure it is worth watching. |
