Hi,

I have just had given to me a mini scrambler motorbike - 2 stroke - with a pull starter.

The button for the ignition kill has disappeared, and all I have is the wire with no button.

simple Question - should this wire be earthed to the frame or not - for the bike to start & run?

many thanks

Tim.

Usually the other way round. A press in kill button usually connects to earth to stop the bike. I said usually, some may be different.

Try it both ways. You won't damage anything.

Well. You weren't exactly what I'd call detailed with your description of your bike. A vague question demands a vague answer.

What I was saying is that I personally have not seen any engines (from lawnmowers to motorcycles) with a push to stop button that didn't connect to earth when you press it.

I was allowing for the possability that since all I know about your bike is that it is a 2-stroke, they might have done something different in this case. It is possible but unlikely. It could even have positive earth or insulated earth return for all I, or indeed anyone reading your question knows.

Many thanks for the answers. I'll give it a go.
Maybe a new spark plug is the first step!

Good idea, a spark plug is quite critical when it comes to getting an engine started.

If the kill switch is gone I'd check your powerband as well, if thats knackered you won't go very far Wink

the powerband is ok thanks, but i did notice some fluff in the gigglepin. Laughing

seriously though.
I've established that the errant lead, when earthed makes no spark at the plug.

So currently, when I pull the starter, with the plug out, and earthed to the frame, there is a very weak spark.

Is this normal on a 2T, or is a new plug needed?

(I went to Halfrauds BTW, and looked at all the bike plugs, but none were the same size)

Thanks
Tim.

If it's a Chinese import it will be an absolute bugger-face to start.

Check which position your choke lever should be in for the choke to be on. If you take the air filter off, look into the back of the carb, with the lever in one position, it'll cover the mouth of the carb with a disk with a hole in it. That means the choke is on.

Your kill switch lead will kill the spark when earthed to the frame.

Get an NGK spark plug, I forget which one, look on eBay, there are loads.

Also where the fuel tap is on the carb, there's a small washer in there, that sometimes twists and blocks the fuel flow.

Cheap crap, you get what you pay for.
