Hey.
I've seen a few TT600's going quite cheap lately, fairly low miles and very clean.

Whats people opinions please?
I've heard they have amazing handling, and bad low rev fuelling but thats it.

The bad fuelling was sorted entirely in I think 2002, and it was pretty much sorted by a free remapping from Triumph in the earlier models.

From what I can see they're good bikes, and just as good as the Jap counterparts, just with a less sporty look. Despite the unsporty look, they are sporty, and that's why I decided against one - I'll be doing too much motorway milage and touring.

handling is better than most of the same age, fuelling problems are pretty well sorted now. lots of tunes available off the net.

In my opinion, yes. I don't see the point in 400s unless you've got a very trigger happy wrist and don't want to lose your licence, or if you're a bit on the small side. The only problem you might have with the Triumph is insurance, for me it was about £700 quoted, which is 40% more than I was paying for the Cat.

14, I think.

I see it as the bike that always played second fiddle to the Jap versions, especially the CBR600 which it seemed to try and want to be. Improved with the 650, if you like the looks, great handling, bit of "Britain, Britain, Little Britain" about it.

If I was in the market, I'd probably buy a Speed Four instead. Ticks more boxes.

I wouldn't buy one over a 400 though Wink

what are the tt's like for holding their value?

just had a look in 'what bike 2006' and the speed 4 is group 12, surely a fairing cant put it up 2 groups? and the 955 is group 14..

Depends on the groups. The 955i was Norwich Union grpup 16 when I bought it, but in the real world the TT600 is probably just as fast. It might be down on power compared to the 955i, but it also weighs a good forty kilos less.

The TT600 is a good bike, I personally found that it was a little bland, but then I did go from a 955i! It felt too easy to go fast everywhere, and quite often I'd look down at the speedo and be doing 110.

On the 955i, you had to work to go fast, and it told you you were going fast. I don't think that I would have felt any different on any other sports 600, I just seem to prefer bikes like the Buell, to stuff like CBR600's.

That said, the TT600 is still as fast as you could ever need, it goes round corners, and is comfy enough for a scottish tour.

I never found an issue with the fuelling on my '02 model either. Apparently it had 'fixed' cams.

Not that strange, is a good thread on 400gb at the moment about why people like there 400's, obviously very bias Smile

you buy a tt600 for the handling but the engine isnt quite as good as other 600 sports bikes of similar age. I tried a 2000 TT600 and two 2001 tt600s.

The 2000 is very peaky no mid range. its not just a fuel map thing, its due to the cams. Fine for the track not so good on the road.

The engine really benefits from being warmed up before riding off, throttle response is a bit jerky at low revs when cold.

I think they are great value for the money particularly on ebay.

I particularly like the twitchy handling which gives the feel of a smaller bike. A lot of 600s are very stable, which is fine for high speed stuff (100mph+) but not so good creating a thrill at lower speeds (60-80).

To get the same thrill from a more stable bike i had to ride a bit faster.

If you are determined to ride exceedingly fast a lot, you might prefer something less twitchy.

I have a tt600 2001, that has been set up on a dyno with a tuneboy (like using a powercommander but better). This smooths out the power delivery but its still not perfect.

I never tried a 2002 or later model so dont know if they are much smoother or not

If you get a 400 for the same money, you will get something with higher mileage which is older, which is an older design, which has been owned by a young lad who may or may not know about maintenance.

In particular honda sports 400s suffer from electrical problems which arent a worry if you know how to fix them, but if you dont, its money to the garage.

TT600s seem to be owned by more careful owners in my opinion (although not me).

Id prefer a speed four, as the detuned engine would suit my riding style better as it would give me more torque at low revs, but when i was buying there werent any speed fours on ebay in my price range.

I may grow into the high rev riding style if i become more confidant and reckless.

also tt600 is lower insurance than other sports 600s, 13 rather than 14

Hi Palmer,

I'll beat Colin to it. Although you should really wait for his reply to as he's given me a lot of help with my TT600.

As a commuter its possibly not ideal, the fueling issues have been sorted but it still like the higher rev's best.

It's as fast as i think I’ll ever need, and would only go up to a bigger bike for the physical size factor in another few years. I find it comfortable and can quiet happily go for a good few hours without any aches or pains, although with my bike i do only get between 110 and 120 miles per 17 liter tank (depending on how I’m riding). I have been caught out a few times when the speed has crept up, but the breaks more than make up when you need to shave it off quickly.

test ride all 3 and decide which one you prefer, then maybe try a couple of different bikes of the type you like to avoid getting a dodgy one.

i reckon pmsonic is paying a bit too much on insurance

im 31 in a dodgy area with 0 years NCB and insuring 4 bikes including the tt600 costs me £300

im with ebikeinsurance

mind you im third party only, so i guess if he is fully comp, that might be good

one thing i forgot to mention
a dual colour tt600 which is registerd 2001, is a 2000 model and will have the extreme cams which result in no mid range

so go for all blue rather than silver and blue
all yellow rather than yellow and black

i have a yellow and black tt600 2001. This bike is fantastic! the handling is brilliant and it just as quick as my old mans cbr600 2002 and beats my bro thundercat in a straight line and the twistys i love my tt but rip the big tt stickers off as it looks so much cleaner without them

I rode an '02 TT once and I absolutely hated the power delivery, it wasn't a throttle, it was a switch, so on-offy that it drove me mad.

Made me instantly hate the bike, whatever else it might have had going for it. Not that I could find anything else actually, apart from them usually being cheaper than the equivalent CBR. Probably cos it looks like one that's melted a bit.

There's a good article in BiKE mag this month about why that is.

Apparently its to do with the emissions regs, and that the engineers seem tho think that if you shut the throttle, the injectors can completely shut off the fuel. Carburettors don't do this, so neither should injectors.

The Buell injection is set up so it keeps fuelling the engine when the throttle is closed. If this were not the case, then the bike would cut in with 1203ccs of high comp V twin engine braking.

The level of revs where this cuts in can be arbitrarily set, as in the example of the new Yammy FZ1 which cuts the fuelling on a closed throttle anywhere above 4500rpm. That is why the bike feels crap in corners when you are thrashing it, because it takes time for the fuel to go from the injectors to the engine.

The injectors are off, cos you closed the throttle a bit, but now you're opening up to exit the corner. Nothing happens so you open up a bit more. The fuel finally reaches the engine and boom, you go caning forward, or highside!

Blame the emissions people I say. And it can be fixed by fooling the injectors into thinking that you never shut the throttle... on the FZ1 this is done with a black box made by some bloke in the states.

I guess that an injection remap which isn't an official Triumph one would probably cure this...

To be fair though, I never noticed it when I had the bike (the bike Bendy rode was mine!) It is just noticed by some people and not by others.

Blame these mysterioud engineers I say, since plenty of their friends seem capable of designing systems that don't act all on-offy or need messing about with to get them to act 'normal'.

they do have a fueling problem but this can be sorted out using fuel maps. I have the speed four which is the naked version, I love the power and the way it runs I think it's like a 2-stroke very high reving all the power is in the top of the revs, I don't think I spend much time 11k rpm on a sunday Twisted Evil

actually, they speed four is detuned, so has less high end power and more mid range than a tt600, along with other sports bikes.

the 2000 tt600 is very peaky with no mid range and everything comes in in a rush at high revs 11k or so, much more than later tt600s or speed fours

I spend more of my time at low or mid revs, so a detuned engine would be better for me.
