As you all may have heard or read that our Government are in the process of trying to get the go ahead for installing an electronic tracking tag on our vehicles so that they can charge us motorists £1.34 per mile that we travel on busy roads.

They are also trying to introduce more tolls on most major roads. If these electronic tracking devices are tampered with then we could be looking at 6 months in jail, wardens and council officials would have the power to stop and search any car to check if the equipment had been interfered with.

This electronic tracking device is most likely to be a windscreen tag of some sorts.

It's bad enough that we all have our own wages taxed and having to pay tax to legally allow your vehicle to be on the road. And now they want us to pay more tax to cover every mile that we do using up the petrol we have already payed tax on. Every pound of petrol we spend around 80p is already taken in tax!

A petition started by Peter Roberts from Telford that is demanding the scheme is to be scrapped has been posted on the PM's website of which has received over 669,000 signatures inside the last 2 months, and you can still sign this petition as it is still live untill February 20th 2007.

So if you wish to also help in making a stand to stop this then please go onto this website ONLINE PETITION and sign the petition to try and scrap this bullshit idea of the Government's.

I admire your spirit, but that's about the 5th time that petition has been posted on here.

Tried to sign it, but never got my confirmation e-mail. Either time I tried.

Don't apologise for it.

Whatever gets peoples attention. Thumbs Up

They have to get another 80,000 signatures in 15 days before they dismiss it (if even they use it as evidence to show there is opposition to such a plan...probably just disregard it) Rolling Eyes

I wouldn't worry. There is no way a system like this would ever put put into practise. It's far too unworkable. Possibly in 50 years time maybe but certainly not in the near future!

How long would it take to set up the monitoring for it? Ages, even the cellphone companies can't get 100% uk coverage so I'm damn sure the DVLA wouldn't be able to do it easily!

One of the reasons petitions like this annoy me - badly worded and doesn't really seem to know what he's talking about.

The two issues along these lines along these lines I know about:
Chipped Numberplates:
An electronic chip in all numberplates will check all vehicles passing from road side camera locations. This is claimed to be to target vehicle left and untaxed drivers. However it could easily be modified to fine speeders and for some road pricing style stuff.

GPS Speed limiting/road pricing:
This will be a 'black box' that will track where and when you are.
Such a device for speed limiting would have maps installed and would prevent you from exceeding the speed limit for the road you are on.
For road taxing, you would be charged based on the route's saved in the 'black box'.

If anything like this ever does go ahead I will be buying a "holiday home" in Gdansk and registering my vehicles there. And those of my friends and family too... of course.

Apart from the people who didn't vote at all, which suggests they're happy with anyone. I spoiled my ballot paper.

I'd have on of these on my vehicle if...

...it could be hooked into a camera system.
Therefor with the black box readings and the camera images as evidence, I would receive half the fine of every driver I recorded using a mobile whilst driving.

And they'd receive half the fine everytime you went past them on the motorway, when they're doing 70mph.

Cameras in all vehicles is something I do worry about as far as being able to at all enjoy the roads goes.
