Hey all,

Well i've been through the cbt and theory and all that jazz, and have spent the last two days freezing my bits off going around edgeware in front of a (very good) instructor... we've done a hundred miles easy, plus all the u-turn "controlled stop" stuff... To be honest the stop was what i was worried about most, but i think it should be fine... The real problem: my test starts just after half eight in the am and it's gonna be a frosty one... i'll probably be doing a stretch of triple lane carriageway (about a kilometre up and the same back with two right turns if the instructor guy is to be believed), we've been up and down the one's on the test routes enough, just worried that i'll be unlucky with the traffic and not be able to change lanes safely...

Anyway, it's gonna happen one way or another, i've got a Yamaha XV250 Virago being delivered tomorrow afternoon (i'm being optimistic about the test....) so fingers crossed...

Any last minute tips or support greatly welcomed....

Cheers.

Relax, try not to think of it as a test but just another ride out and make your observations noticable. Good luck let us know how you get on.

If you can't do a manoeuvre safely, then don't do it. If you do something dangerous the examiner won't like it but if you just don't turn where he tells you to then he simply has to find another route. It's not a test in navigating. Obviously you'll endear yourself to him more if you go the right way - but it's better to err on the navigating side, not the safe riding side, if it comes down to it.

Just think of it like this: when you pull out of the test centre you've already passed. You just have to ride around safely for 40 minutes and the licence is yours. Treat it like any other ride. The examiners are not unreasonable - they're bikers too and they want you to pass.

cheers all,

gonna take the test on the training centre's 125 (smoooth running brand new ybr125, had two days on it and feels fine) cos my bike's not getting in until later tomorrow, good luck with the 1pm test Eatingsheep, hopefully this time tomorrow we'll both be glad it's done and can get on with enjoying it.

Might post something at a little later stages as far as maintenance/general info on owning a Virago..... focussing on the positive as you can see...

good advice thanks, as far as just treating it as another ride-out, been driving my 125 for the last year to and from work (plus the odd weekend wander), just need to chill out and try to make what i'm doing obvious to the tester i suppose...

I'll let you know....

Woo Hoo!!

Thanks a million for all your support last night... woke up crazy early this morning, then had a public transport nightmare on the way to the test centre... there was one cab, one tube and two busses involved... but got there..... nice tester, icy roads, cold as hell... but passed it!!! couldn't believe it, felt pretty relaxed throughout, a little too much cos i forgot to indicate right when pulling from parked behind a car, but incredibly ended up passing with 0 minor points against.... i think he was just freezing and wanted to go back to his nice warm little room...

my new bike is arriving within the hour, and very fortunately... i'm now licensed to drive it....

all the very best to the rest of you testing today/friday, the best advice i got yesterday... just pretend it's any other ride (but try to think of it like your mum's watching.... and she has bad blood pressure)...

Onwards and upwards!

thanks again all,

quick question... my new bike has arrived (a second hand virago XV250), looks great, got it for a good price, just got the insurance sorted.... Now the guy i got it from started it up perfectly in front of me not two hours ago... but i've gone back to it just to crank it up and warm up the engine for a bit before the expected snow tonight... and i can't get it to start... now i know this is a really basic question, but i don't want to mess around with the choke/throttle/starter too much, i've gotten so used to starting my 125 in a specific (starter>pump the choke 2-3 times>open throttle) that i'm not sure what's the best way to get a bike that's been sitting for a few weeks back to life... i rang the dude i bought it from and he said just to leave the choke open full and not open the throttle at all.... My plan is to just leave it for an hour or two and have another go.... this is sensible yes?

this would be very frustrating if it hadn't happened with my last bike till i got the knack of it, and also it's not gonna be taxed for another day or two so can't ride it even when it does start...

Just want to hear it again.... that's all...

thanks...

Mmm, I think your right to leave it a while. It's such a cold day anyway which won't help.
Well done on your pass though Thumbs Up

yeah thanks, will do, don't wanna mess it up by fooling around with it and maybe drain the battery or whatever... i'll have a last look, cover it up against the snow and come back to it later/tomorrow...

still buzzing about the test... would have been such a pain to fail a test on the day your bike arrives.... sheesh....

Congrats alovern, must of been a bit slippy first thing this morning!! bet your stoked!

I manged to scrape through mine with 10 minors Confused Got so nervous and the Examiner made me to a slow control manouever that threw me slightly.

Came back a bag of nerves but held it together.. I guess a pass is a pass Laughing

Good luck with your new bike, sure it will be a joy to ride when it gets a bit warmer! Cool
