GPZ500s Heated grips

Hi all.
I've just bought some Oxford heated grips (with the dial heat controls not the 2007 button controls) and i want to wire them into the ignition switch so i don't accidently flatten the battery if i knock the dial when putting the cover on the bike at night & to make sure some kind person doesn't press the dial in the car park at work & flatten my battery
I've got a haynes manual with the wiring diagram but can anyone recommend where i should wire the positive lead into?
I was going to fit the negative lead to the battery as described in the instructions.

ok your best bet(easyiest)
is wire the heated grips to the park/side light (inside your head light)
your heated grips use less than 20 watts (which is next to nothing) and the side light will only come on when the ignition is on,
thats all i have done on my gs500 and its perfect.
no hassle and no relay to worry about

Heres the diagram i drew when i wired mine into my GPZ305.

If your doing things properly use the relay. That should protect your wiring loom.

I used the black horn wire for the 12v feed. Its 12v when igntion on and 0v when ignition off. The same applied to my GPZ400R so im almost ceratin that the GPZ500 will use the same colour scheme.

I used a tamiya connector on my battery, rather than connecting it direct. That way i can quickly disconnect the heated grips and connect my optimate charger.

I have a confession...I think i may have messed things up a little.

I thought i'd attempt fitting the grips on my own. I attached the black o-ring connector from the hot grips to the negative lead on the battery, i found the terminal connector block for the wires coming from the ignition lock under the petrol tank (red, blue, grey, white, black). Orginally i attached the positive (hot grips red) wire to the red wire in the terminal block, then I found out that's the parking light so the grips only worked when the bike was parked with the ignition lock on! Then i attached the grips to the grey wire. This seemed to work, the led on the hot grips control switch came on when the ignition was on & went off when i turned the key to the off position.
Thinking everything was fine i put the bike back together (cable tied the wires to the existing wires & re-fitted the petrol tank) only to find that the grips don't actually get hot.
I've plugged everything in but they're just not getting hot.
Is it possible i could have damaged the heating elements when pushing the grips onto the bars? I've noticed when the grips are "on" and the dial is set to anything other than high the red led seems to flash quickly or flicker. Is it supposed to do this?

You need a multimeter to check the wiring.

They don't cost much.

I don't know what you've done.

You could have damaged the grips putting them on, you'll only know when you fully tested the circuit.

Hey,

Dont worry about damaging them. When i put mine on i had to place a block of wood over the ends then litterally hammer them on to the handlebar. Mine work absolutley fine.

What u really need is a relay. That way the grips will be getting all there power direct from the battery, when the igntion is on, rather than through your wiring loom.

Its very simple to wire in and costs peanuts. See my preious post for a wiring diagram.

Hey,

Yer that will do you. When u get the relay check the numbers printed on the underside, you should notice that they match up with my wiring diagram. Simply connect everything as shown and it will all work.

My guess would be that your grips are not working correctly due to them running through the wiring loom, and not getting enough power.

My relay arrived
I'm a bit confused about how to wire them in following your diagram (I'm frightened something will go pop & my bike wont work!)

I've tried to draw a diagram of my relay. Which pins to i wire the rear brake switch +ve, heated grip +ve & -ve, 3amp fuse & battery to?

Just thought I'd say, I was having similar problems as described in this thread (taking ages to heat) so bought the Relay in this thread and just fitted it using the guide too. All seems to work perfectly fine....although I havent tested how quickly or how hot the grips get yet but I assume they'll be fine.
