Right,
I'm moving to a new flat in a few months & want a pet to keep me company, i thought of getting a dog but want somthing diffrent for a change, so what reptiles make good pets. Do they respond to there owners like cats/dogs & will they eat me?
Been thinking of a Lizard or Snake, but nothing too big & not too small.
How much will everything cost me as i know the tank & lights will probably be more then the actual animal. |

I suggest you do tons of reading before you decide on something specific.

What about something like a African Grey?
I guess it depends how much time/money you have really to what animal you get! ____________________ Mutley - 1988 Austin Mini City - Blog

I have fish as they're eays to hide when the landlady comes around, I fancy a ferret, my uncle has two and they're almost wild used for rabbiting, but a friend has a pet one it's like a cross between a dog and a cat, takes it out in her bag, it does tricks too.
her ferret looks liek this, it's only young tho so is quite small/skinny
https://www.animalnetwork.com/Critters/profiles/art/ferret.jpg
or how about a house bunny? they're kind cool though not as 'macho' as a reptile.
I had a pair of hamsters, they were cool, the male escaped from his cage and then went to see the girl next door = 9 hamster babies.. clever little shite, both lived till they were 3yro ____________________ Insta - FemFeral |

I'd go for a parrot.
Fish are good but pain in the tits to maintain...everyone gets lazy with the maintenance.
Ferrets look nice but I don't trust them like I don't trust Collies. Can never bee to sure whether they're happy/bouncing up and down or about to take a chunk out of your finger/hand/thigh. Sme goes for hamsters, mice, rats etc. |

Ferretts look like dangerous buggers, would never go near one.
I thought about fish, very relaxing. Mate has an African parot, very clever although he would take of you're arm if you put it int he cage, bit annoying sometimes..
I like the idea of a Tortoise tho. |

easy answer to fish maintenance get soem hardy species, I've got some fancy goldfish and mirror carp fingerlings, they live in a 58litre tank, happily, they get neglected for upto 3 weeks while I'm awa yfrom uni and do fine, they're growing well.
rule with aquariums is the smaller the tank the higher the maintenance, also you can help yourself and the fish by getting some live plants for the fish to browse and to break down the nitrogen content, just watch our for snails.
my tank was £25 off ebay delivered 2nd hand, fish were £5 and the food £3, water comes from tap.. very cheap compared to puppy dawg who's just turned her nose up at some steak left overs
I don't like collies either, do have a tendency to be sligh, prefer an honest spaniel ____________________ Insta - FemFeral |

Get some degu's. They're cute, sociable and funny. If you get a few you'll notice they all have their own personalities. They're brilliant.
They also last a while as well. We bought 2 which turned out to be pregnant so ended up with 10 altogether. We got rid of 4 boys and just kept the girls. we're down to our last one now, but she's nearly 7 years old.

Hey Misc, reptiles are very interesting to keep, but obviously you can't play many games with them.
My Bearded dragons
Towards the bottom of that thread is a pretty good run down of what you might pay for a reptile.
The initial setup is expensive, the viv the lights and environment pieces all cost quite a bit.
My advice is to get some knowledge on your chosen reptile first, stick to UK sites for information as a lot of yanks for example handle things in different ways, they also have brilliant weather most of the time, which helps.
Ebay is great for all the smaller things like water bowls, feeders, fake plantation etc.
The rocks i have i found myself and cleaned up. ____________________ Cleverly disguised as a responsible adult.

If you want a reptile, go for it. I used to keep quite a few and miss them sometimes. Id do a lot of reading, join a reptile keeping forum and get advice first. Get a less difficult to keep species.
You will need a propper Vivarium, ceramic heater (caged), thermostat, temp and humidity gauge, light on timer, suitable bedding / substrate, water bowl, water spray, tweeers for dangling the old mice for snakes. Lizards often need additional vitamins / calcium. (Trying hard to remember now! Its been a while!) Moist areas for shedding like dampend moss. You'll be able to think about that better when you know what you want.
Snakes are easier in that you can buy frozen mice in bulk, wheres lizards will either need livefood or fresh fruit.
I didnt feed any of my snakes livefood (isnt that actually illegal to buy pets as food for other animals? Im sure it is) and they were just fine. You can get fussy eaters, but if you buy them young and get them into a routine with you, it will be fine.
If you want a liazard, Bearded Dragons are very cute and curious. I never actually kept any myself but they are adorable and have heard they can be very nice pets! They dont seem skittish like perhaps water dragons and leopard geckos are.
Snake-wise, some species have really specific humidity requirements etc. You will still need to measure humidity and temperature with any species but some are easier than others, depending on where they come from.
If you want something quite small and quirky, maybe youd like a Westerm Hognose? They terribly cute! Chunky small snakes, mildy venomous but rear fanged and harmless. Perfectly legal to keep and have loverly keeled scales.
This is Oggy.

Or if you want something to keep you on your toes, Leucistic Texas Rat Snakes are cool, quite easy to keep, common to buy and fiesty! (Can be interbred a lot for their colour, before buying handle and check scale formation and the eyes for buldging). This is Candy and she was my favorite! She has personality.
