Hi, I am looking for an intercom (not biker to pillion). One of the ones where you can talk to your mates on their bike while your riding your own. What sort of price should i expect to pay and has anyone got any links for some good quality cheap ones?
Cheers
Tam

Search on ebay for PMR, 2 way radio, walkie talkie etc

All you need is a set of 2 that comes with earpieces, something like this is perfect - https://cgi.ebay.co.uk/UNUSED-GOODMANS-2-WAY-PMR-446-RADIOS-MODEL-GPMR-117_W0QQitemZ140079844336QQihZ004QQcategoryZ72405QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

On a 50 you can probably get away with shouting over to your mate.

I bought a pair of these from Maplin a few years ago. (seem to remember them being cheaper though) Picked up a couple of cheap radios and although the whole setup worked ok I had a few issues with it.

I strapped the PTT button to the left handgrip and it was fine out of town, but operating PTT and clutch at the same time in heavy traffic was a pain. The button was just slightly in the wrong place. At higher speeds the wind noise rendered the whole thing a bit useless. More expensive setups have auto-adjusting volume / noise cancelling technology.

For conversing with a pillion I had much more luck with that acoustic Backchat system. Used it on a daily commute for years and loved it. On long journeys it was a bit uncomfortable and in heavy rain it could get water in the tubes that cut the sound. Only good for regular use by the same two people. Serious hygiene issues with the invasive earplugs and I never let anyone but the missus use it with me.

The idea is to be able to communicate over the wind and engine noise.
Autocom use a directional mic and speaker system which picks up/puts out in a very narrow beam. The theory is that only your voice and what your mate says (which may or may not be shite anyway) is transmitted by the radio to keep things clear. (Less information more clarity sort-a-thingy).

I have an Autocom system in a poly-bag in my garage.
(Incl. the speakers.) I keep meaning to fit it to the bike, but what an arse of a thing to fit inside a helmet.
You have to phaph about to get the speakers perfectly 'focused' to push the sound doon yer lug hole, which means packing out with velcro stuff to get the best sound.

I find it easier to just not have any friends.

Listening to your mp3 files is easier.

Maplin do a kit for bikes. But the earpiece hurts your heid after about 1/2 hour. Fitted speakers are best.

This looks exactly like the headset sold in Maplin for £30. It states that it is for an open face helmet tho.

I went to look at the ones in Maplins today before I went on to Ebay. Maplins do have a wide selection of radios and the staff in the store in Cardiff knew their stuff.

However, they didn't have the right adaptors to hook up their headset to any of the radios on sale. The adaptor they had to connect the two pin headset into the one pin socket in radio made the radio constantly transmit, so no good for 2-way conversation!!

This might just be the case in the Cardiff store but make sure you speak to the staff and get them to test the set up if they or you aren't sure. And remember if buying off Ebay always ask the seller questions to make sure the headset and radio are compatible, or maybe the link below will help.
