if you have a break light then it has to have a full set of lights, headlight, tail light etc. get it mot'd then fit the break light after

You need to check out the VOSA website, they will give you all the details regarding whats needed for an MOT.

A daytime MOT is a very grey area:

so it seems but i have found this

"MOT You will need to MOT the bike, usually for daylight use only. The detailed requirements are provided on the MOTUK web site. For me the key items to bear in mind are:
finding an MOT tester (or testing station) that understands what testing a trials bike is about, ie testing for a daylight MOT
if you don’t have working front and rear lights, you don’t need indicators, break lights or reflectors
you do need an electric horn (not a bulb one) for a bike after 1.1.1973 and it has to be audible "

if this is true then i am sorted...
like u said i would put the brake light back on afterwards...

suppose i should just take it up the mot station and see wot they say....

cheers

Problem is the MOT wording is dubious. Says about lights needing to work if fitted, etc, but then says lights are only needed on bikes newer than ~1931. Doesn't actually say that not having lights fitted on a bike that should have them is a fail.

You are not so much looking for a tester who understands the rules, more one who is prepared to read them a certain way.

Either way, riding a modern bike on the road without lights is a construction and use offence.

All the best

Keith

Short answer, it's a bit of a grey area.

Talk to a few MOT places, some won't do them at all and others will do them to whatever requirements they think it is. I've had a daytime MOT done on a bike that was a race bike with just a brake light and horn plugged back in, no headlight, indicators, tail light, mirrors or pillion seat/pegs. Know others who've got daytime MOT's on bikes without any lights and just a horn mounted to the bars, there's nothing on the MOT certificate to say that its daytime only.

What is it you are interested in mot'ing?

All that most offroad bikes need to pass is a £12.99 megahorn from Halfords and tyres with 1mm of tread and gaps between the blocks that are not significantly larger than the blocks themselves on knoblies.

A lot of dealers and big mot garages don't like to do them, probably worried about any comeback. But most backstreet places will do them and even bend a few rules if needs be to pass it.

It will fail as the rear tyre is not covered by the seat or bumper.
