i thought it was a safe choice with my kawasaki er5 , its the default training bike and couriers use them, must be bullet proof, but recent annoyances with it make me think its badly designed and when i have to fix something it usually is such a massive hastle and doesnt work first time.

does anyone have any bikes that are easy to maintain but big enough to have fun on?

ER-5s are about as simple as they come tbh.
Yes you've had problems but it certainly doesn't mean they're hard to maintain.

The only way you could have something simpler really would be to have something air cooled, maybe an XBR500, 500cc single.

In terms of easy-to-maintain fun bikes, I think the new BMW F800 has to be up there.
German reliability, parallel twin, belt drive.... bet its very easy to live with and I'd be surprised if you ever had a problem.

Single-Cylinder Crosser/Scramler. The most likely second bike for me.

I find my cx tremandous fun, but its a personal thing.. a mate of mine had a go and hes ridden everthing to supercharged busas to tuned gsxr's all sorts of exotic madness, had a go and said it was terrorfying Laughing Not because of the fast because of its... quirky handleing caracteristics.. most modern bikes ive tryed dont do much for me because there too predictable Confused

If its just for fun i'd be tempted to go for a bike 250>400 1/2 cylinder something or other..

Allthough somebody on here bought a chinese copy monkey bike and seems to have a hoot on it Thumbs Up (its based on the c90 engine and you dont get simpler than that generally)

I have never worked on an ER5 but I would be surprised if they were 'badly designed' and that fixing anything on it is more hassle than on a different bike. Like you have already said it is a popular bike for training schools and I doubt they would use choose to use anything unreliable and difficult to maintain.

If you are having problems fixing things too first time around then I would be inclined to look at your diagnosis and mechanical skills as it isn't usual practice to need two goes at something in order to fix it. I don't think it is fair to blame Kawasaki for that. Everyone has to learn somewhere though and you do learn a lot from your mistakes and doing your own maintenance is certainly a learning curve. All bikes require plenty of looking after so just don't fall into the trap of thinking that other bikes require less attention than your ER5. Very Happy
