timing?

been reading my manual to find out how to check my timing and it says something about connecting a timing light to the flywheel? does anyone know what this means as i have not heard of one of these before and am confused. thanks in advance

strobe timing light - don't see many of them around these days

Basically makes your flywheel appear stationary even though it's spinning, you can then see if all the timing marks line up as expected.

Hi

You connect the strobe light to the ignition system (normally an inductive pickup you clip around an HT lead) and point it at the flywheel. The light flashes when the ignition fires, so you can see the position of the flywheel at that moment.

I rather suspect the timing on your bike (an '04 NSR125?) is keyed on the end of the crank and cannot be adjusted (or indeed move at all from the factory setting). It will have a CDI so unless you've got the stator plate slotted to allow you to adjust it checking the ignition timing is probably a total waste of time. If it is slotted, the fact that you have no idea what a strobe lamp is probably indicates you shouldn't be touching it.

What leads you to suspect the timing is out?

The one thing it is useful for in those circumstances is to make sure the ignition is advancing. However, I've never seen it not advance on a CDI engine, and it's a somewhat messy job if the flywheel runs in oil.

Would a 125 2-smoke have an advance curve anyway? They never used to.

If it can rev to above 5000 rpm, then I'd say so. I agree with you that the timing is probably fixed, so the only reason I can think of that the fella's manual says to point a strobe at it is to check the advance actually works.

the reason i want to check is that it has been running like crap lately, there is a flat spot from 3000 to 7500 rpm and occasionaly at 10 to 11000 rpm have tried cleaning fuel lines, carb, air box filter,exhaust port, powervalve and exhaust and im not left with much else to check, so im just eliminating the last few possible causes until i have to seek proffesional help

It could the clutch slipping, just sorted one out on our xs250 It only cost £20 so might be worth checking how much meat is left on them.

dont think it is that as it sounds all choked up when revving in neutral, but only from 3000 upwards below that throttle response is fine.

also i only get about 120 miles to a full tank of fuel. where it used to do about 160-180

As above, I think you'll have fixed timing and the advance will be working because it reaches high rpm. Not much need for the strobe?

'spose you've done the obvious, like stick a new plug in it?

i have tried an new plug and makes no difference, i have a feeling it could be the jets, but its been a gradually deteriotating on and off problem for the last 1000 miles or so, it did work ok for 500 miles ish when i first got it also i have never been able to go faster than 80-85 mph, where as nsr's are supposed to do 95 ish i think, it is fully de-restricted and alains reccomends the size jets that i installed and he is quite renowned for his knowledge of nsr's so i wouldnt have thought they would be wrong but i will try changing them back anyway and see if this helps.
