Been using earplugs for the past 6 weeks while commuting home on A roads. Who else uses them, or if not, why?
(Apologies if this has been asked many times before...)

I always use earplugs as it makes riding a lot more pleasureable and I honestly believe that the less obtrusive noise that you can hear whilst riding the more it allows you to concentrate on what you are doing and hence the better you ride.

One problem I find is that it makes it even easier to go stupidly fast - add in a decent double bubble and you can cruise at twice the speed limit and it feel slower than doing the speed limit on a naked bike without them Confused.

Most of the time. If I'm popping from shop to shop in town, I'll not bother. If I'm going to be going faster than say, 45, I'll wear them.

I've found this as well, concentration seems to increase as wind noise is reduced. The only time I find using them odd is before I can pick speed up, around town whilst at lights or zebra crossings I just feel a bit deaf, which is why I don't use them all the time, especially as I commute in London and need to constantly listen out for police sirens etc...

weird how they know.

we get them free at work anyway, come in tubs of 1000's, so i wear them all the time now to/from work

Never wear them. I keep meaning to buy some every time i go to the bike shop but always forget.

I'll try some of those cheap foam ones but there's no way i'd pay £50-100 for some of those custom moulded ones.

Hi,

I have worn them for a few years now, often dont bother for 15minute dash but do for longer journeys. I find it makes longer trips much less tiring and you can hear when you get there.

I use the custom moulded plugs from Green leopard as I dont get on with foam ones. They are also handy when needing to sleep when camping and are good for removing the drone on planes.

Regards
charlotte

I've been using earplugs for about 3 years now - to dampen Dad's snoring from 2 rooms away...

On the bike? Nah, like to hear what's going on...plus I like the lightly-silenced tunes my bike tends to play.

I've never used them, and don't intend to either. I hate to have my senses altered as such, much the same reason why I never use a tinted visor.

Hi

Been using the molded ones for about 5 years now. Definatly help, but also (as G says) makes it far easier to go more quickly without noticing.

My hearing is definatly suffereing from riding a bike.

All the best

Keith

Bit of a no-brainer, wear them or go deaf. Been wearing them for years, my mate never has and said he has a quet lid.

Funny that he always has ringing in his ears now and he is only 30 years old. Rolling Eyes

Never used them on a bike, and never plan to. I don't like the idea of not being fully aware of whats going on around me.

Got hold of a bag of 26 odd pairs, things don't seem to stay in my ear for long though, even if I ram them in as far as poss.

Would wear them all the time if they stayed in Sad

Well, you will have to get used to it when you go deaf from not using them.

More seriously, I would say you can hear more (at a decent speed) using ear plugs, as they mainly affect the wind noise and the like (think it is certain frequencies they have most effect on).

All the best

Keith

When I first started riding ( twenty odd years ago ) I didn't wear them, then after about 10 years I started to use the disposable ones which were ok, but then I just got out of the habbit of wearing them after about 8 years. After a while I notice that I could only hear half conversations and the tv was being turned up more. Last year I got a pair made for me and life is bliss, can still hear my autocom and mp3 player but without the roar of the road. Just hope my hearing does come back a bit more.

Always wear them.

I find the "Rhubarb and Custard" coloured Lazer Lites to be really effective.

Don't buy them from a bike shop though, they are too expensive.
Get them from a local industrial clothing/equipment retailer.

Much cheaper.

Hi. Use them 99% of the time. The other 1% is when I'm to lazy to walk 1/2 a mile down the road for the newspaper. Laughing Rolling Eyes

Even with the best earplugs in you are still fully aware of what is going on around you. In fact as Keith said, you are possibly more aware as you can hear whats happening rather than just wind noise going over everything.

Everyone has a right to decide whether they want to protect themselves so it's a personal decision and no one can force anyone to do it (well the law does with seatbelts and helmets etc) but surely common sense tells you to protect yourself as much as possible?
