Just picked up a GT550 but l,m having a problem with petrol flowing out the airbox rubber on the left hand side of the carb when the engine is running or when the fuel tap is in the primary postion, l,ve striped the carbs and there were no stuck floats and everything seemed fine.

Any ideas??

Your floats are not shutting the fuel off, float height is wrong or the needle valve seat is worn and not seating properly or you have a bit of crud from the tank caught under the needle valve seat.

If you've cleaned them out, then almost certainly down to the needle and seat of the float valve being worn. You'll need new ones, best to do all the carbs while you have it in bits.

GT550's have a vacuum diaphragm in the tap, this means that fuel will only flow from the tap when there is a vacuum in the little pipe that goes to the tap (made by the engine turning over), if the diaphragm is knackered fuel can flow constantly from the tap, the pressure from this can cause fuel spillage from your carbs, or the airbox and top end of your engine can fill up with fuel, so check the tap only flows in the prime position when the engine isn't running, you should only have the tap in the on or res position for normal running, the PRI position is just to let the fuel flow faster when you run out and before you select reserve

The tap appears to work just fine - the carbs are only overflowing when the bike is running or it's switched to prime.

In the past I've used a small drill-bit to manually clean/cut the float valve seat in the carb. Have you tried observing the float movement with the carbs on the bike? I've had a problem before with the float valve sticking/catching on the side of the bit it slides in, but only when the right way up.

float vavles are cheap enough just replace them and dont piss about trying to get worn ones to seal. Often the assembly has an O ring around the outside that also wears, pull out the seat and see if this is the case (im not overly familiar with keihins).
