My wife is a bit paranoid (more than normal) about speeding at the moment. She's passed her CBT on a 125, and will be taking her test sometime in the next few months. As we understand it she'll be able to ride a restricted bike for two years.

How would a speeding ticket, if caught speeding in a car, affect her bike licence? She says her cbt instructor told her that she would have to retake her cbt if she was caught speeding.

I would like to persuade her that 32 in a 30 zone is unlikely to get her a ticket! Rolling Eyes

Any ideas? Smile

Only the same way it would affect the car license.

You won't lose a CBT for speeding in the car, but potentially you could if you are caught by a policeman pratting about on a bike.

Judging by the amount of people who /do/ prat about on L plates, it won't be a problem.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.

Hi

I take it she has had a car test for over 2 years. If so then the 6 point / 2 year limit (which is the real nasty) doesn't apply.

All the best

Yep. I got my car license 15 months ago. 9 Months clean *touches wood* to go.

And if they revoked her CBT for doing 32 in a 30 zone then what will they do to 3 kids who were driving peds around without L plates, dangerously and being a pain in the arse to car drivers?

You have one license with different entitlements on it; car, bike, lorry and any of the other license types. Get caught speeding (or doing anything else wrong) and points go on your one license and affect all your entitlements. If you get banned then you loose all your entitlements. If you have to retake your test (as can be ordered when you're banned) then you only have to retake one of your tests to get your license back with all entitlements.

Basically her CBT instructor was probably hoping just to worry her into paying attention to the speed limits. Wink

I didn't think they could take your CBT off you?

If she was stopped speeding on either the bike or the car she could be given points on her licence, a fine and a ban (if the speed was deemed to warrant it). She would still retain her CBT pass certificate.

If she has held her full car licence for over two years, she could in theory tot-up 12 points before receiving an automatic ban.

If she's held it for less than two years and got six points (on either vehicle or any combination of the two) her licence would be revoked. She could apply for a new provisional licence immediately, I suspect the CBT certificate would actually still be valid until it is 'out of date' but she'd have to sit her car test again.

I think everyone who has been caught out with the 2 year / 6 point limit I have heard of has been forced to redo their CBT.

All I have seen officially is this:-

https://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/LearnerAndNewDrivers/NewlyQualifiedDrivers/DG_4022566

which suggests that you revert to a full learner, including needing to apply for a licence as a first licence.

All the best

if she has had her car licence for more than two years then she can get 12 points total bike or car. Wink

Correct me if I'm wrong, as far as i understand it if you are on a provisional licence you can be banned but only when you've reached the full 12point(?) limit
As soon as you get your full bike licence you will have it revoked (not banned) and you have to apply for your provisional licence again.

If you have a full licence on either the 6points thing doesn't apply as far as i know.. (I'll try and find out for sure..)

Thanks for all that. She's been driving on a full car licence for about 17 years, so the two year / 6 point rule doesn't apply.

Thumbs Up

Her CBT instructor is an idiot.

(I'm an instructor Wink )

EDIT - normal car rules still apply though, ie. 120 would mean loss of license, including cbt
