Afternoon all,

I'd like to swap out my cheap centre speaker for a spare pair of decent bookshelf speakers for my home theatre setup but it's been a while since school and I can't remember the best way to do it! Laughing

I think parallel is the way to go to keep the same resistance on the circuit, is the right?

Thanks in advance.

Above is parallel. Series just adds them up. Either way it can't be good? . .

Won't be as simple as that... Speakers don't operate on a single voltage/single current like regular electrical circuits.. you need to take into account the impedance (the variable resistance offered by a coil)

unfortunately, while I know the basic theory of Why it isn't that simple.. I don't know enough detail as to offer a solution..
sorry..

it MIGHT work, however, it won't be giving you the best sound, and it may damage the speakers in the long run.

Just get some decent bookshelf speakers from Richer sounds and connect them up, using decent cable. One speaker per connection point on the amp. Never heard parallel / series used for speakers, just batteries etc!
Were you thinking of single / bi wired perhaps?
I recommend the Keff Cresta 10s they currently are doing for under £50, really top value!

You would be better off just getting a better centre speaker. You can get a Kef Q6c for about 50 quid new.

True, a decent centre speaker needn't cost the earth and they can sound pretty good!
What are your front left / right speakers like? I misread your original post, didn't realise you were intending to put two speakers into one amp outlet. If you're going to run bookshelf speakers as fronts without a centre, power them from the front L/R amp outputs and configure the system as a 4 speaker setup, no centre.
If you want to use the centre output, do as True Blue suggests and buy a decent aftermarket centre such as the Keff he suggests. It's probably worth upgrading your fronts at the same time though to get a nicely balanced system, and then plan on an amp upgrade for the future to get the best out of it!

I've got some AE Aegis Evo 3's on the front, my old skinny floor standers demoted to the rear speakers, my old Pioneer bookshelf speakers demoted to extra surround back speakers.
I've got a Eltax Atomic centre speaker which cost me a tenner from good old Richer Sounds - it's "100 Watts"

As the 7.1 setup isn't really being used in pure form (yet) I was thinking of combining the bookshelf speakers to use as a centre speaker but I really don't want to go buggering up my amp or speakers by using the wrong impedance.

I hope that makes more sense now - sorry I was in a rush to go out when I first posted.

Cheers. Thumbs Up

Edit - just found this page which tells me exactly what I was needing to know.
Not good news though - two speakers in series increases the impedance, in parallel it decreases so not good either way really.

New centre speaker it is then. Smile

Yes that makes far more sense, sounds like you're reasonably well sorted already!

As far as I can tell, combining two 8 ohm speakers into the same output would make the total impedance 4 ohms for the pair wired in parallel and 16 ohms if wired in series, no idea what that would do to sound quality, personally I'd stick to a single, good quality standard centre as this should also give much better focus of vocals etc - it as after all what the audio on the film and the amplifier outputs were designed and optimised for!

Yeah, things aren't bad. Smile
My amp only supports 8 ohms, so I'll definitely not be risking multiple speakers on one output.
It's only not I've been watching proper DVD's, so of course the centre is used much more than before when ~700MB AVI's were the way to go.
