Sorry if this is an exceptionally thick question boys and girls, but you lot seem to know what you're chatting about.

Basically, last year, on the the uni halls network, my MSN worked fine, but now, in our house (NTL wireless broadband) it has worked about twice since I moved in (September).

One of my mates had a similar problem; he recommended getting rid of the anti-virus software the uni insisted on, I did that, and it achieved nothing, so now I'm desperate!

Please help!

Karma/a pint could be on it's way!

Ok the obvious thing here to ask is - are the relevant ports open on your router? (1863, 5190, 6891-6900, 6901)

If at this stage you dont know or how to check, post up your router brand and model (and version if shows one)

cheers

Ah yes, the obvious thing.... Rolling Eyes Neutral

Right, I've been downstairs and checked, it's a Buffalo Air Station G54, not sure if that means anything to anyone?

Also, should probably point out that the other 5 people living here have no trouble with MSN...

I get the first message, then when I press troubleshoot, I get the second one.

Sorry if I'm being incredibly stupid here...

Do either of the messages give you an error number that start 0x or similar?

Somehow I'm coming across even more of a moron than I really am (honest!).

Seem to be incapable of even attaching files properly!

Ah well, here's the second one...

Not really an option, mate already has his hardwired to it, plus my room is about as far away from the router as it's physically possible to be whilst still being in the house...

Surely if other people can access it from the same router, it's my computer that's the issue? Confused

Yeah, already use one, but it's annoying, and I'd like Live Messenger to work!

try this and let us know how you get on

1. The date on your computer needs to be set properly -- double click the clock verify that
the time and date are set.
2. If your password information is not saved, verify that you are typing it in with the
correct case (uppercase or lowercase).
3. Change your password @ https://login.passport.com/ChangePW.srf to
something smaller (under 10-12 characters), then try signing in again.
4. If you use a firewall (like ZoneAlarm, Norton Internet Security etc. ), it's possible
that Messenger doesn't have the correct rights to access the Internet, especially since you
upgraded. You may need to re/add Messenger to the allowed list of programs in your firewall
if this is the case.
5. If you disabled your firewall in the past, it still may be blocking Messenger -- try
restarting it and see if that helps the situation. You also might try uninstalling an
installed firewall, to verify that it isn't causing a problem (even if it is disabled).
6. Clear your IE cache and cookies -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then click the Delete Files button, and when that's complete click the
Delete Cookies button.
7. Check your IE Security settings -- open Internet Explorer, click the Tools menu, then
Internet Options, then Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section, and verify that "Check
for server certificate revocation" is unchecked. Also verify that 'Use SSL 2.0' and Use SSL
3.0' is checked, then click OK.
8. Click Start, then Run, and enter the following:
regsvr32 softpub.dll
then click OK
and do the same for the following:
regsvr32 wintrust.dll
regsvr32 initpki.dll
regsvr32 MSXML3.dll

Right, I've done everything except for the two below, with no success.

I'll be completely honest; I don't know how to do either of these things, I don't even know what (if any) firewall(s) I have.

How do I go about finding out and then sorting these things out.

Also thought I should point out, I don't use Internet Explorer any more (got Firefox) but both it and Windows Media Player both insist on asking me for my old Uni network user-name and password before they access the net.

Ok, have you got a firewall built into the router? If it has NAT or SPI dont bother with zonealarm or any other software firewall - you dont need it (Unless you dont trust those you share the connection with in which case the windows firewall will do fine)

Secondly the live messenger screen shows the error to be the key ports, have you been to portforward.com? On there it tells you how to open the right ports for your IP specifically, your friends may all be working fine but if they are at the IP 192.168.1.2 and you are at 192.168.1.3 he might have the ports open but not for you.

you can check in your network settings for your individual IP (from a router it will almost certainly start 192.168)

hope this helps

Not meaning to be funny mate, but as the thread title suggests, I don't know a huge amount about computers.

As a direct result of this, what you just wrote, although doubtlessly very helpful, was like reading a foreign language.

Sorry Embarassed

Ok I accept this, but in order to get it sorted perhaps learning what some of the terminology means would help you out?? Its like trying to fix a bike without knowing what any of the tools do first.

If the router does not belong to you then speak to the person who is does, they will know most of what i posted.

Not meaning to write in an alien language but there really is no other way to diagnose this effectively.

cheers

Fair enough mate, cheers for the help anyway, I'll run the advice by someone more technically minded than myself (probably my dad) a bit later.

Tried that Port Forward business but I couldn't track down which exact router was mine.

The router came with the house I believe, which suggests it belongs to our landlady, who struggles to understand how a wooden door works.

Never mind eh? Very Happy

Hang on, you seem to be accessing the web via the Uni, which is why you are being prompted for your old Uni credentials.

Do this:

1) open Internet Explorer (yes, not firedox)
2) tools > internet options
3) click connections tab
4) click LAN Settings button
5) report what you have listed in there. If there is something in "Use automatic configuration script" or "use proxy server (blah blah) then unclick the boxes next to them. All you should have enabled is "Automatically detect settings". Switch everything else off.

To be honest I am surprised you had any internet access at all if this is wrong Smile

Mate, in the most heterosexual way possible, I love you!

I knew it would be something simple!

It's a pretty dumb idea to use a webmessenger system outside of msn as most of them involve passing passwords in plain text over the internet - use https://webmessenger.msn.com instead Smile
