Battery fully charged?
Float bowls drained and checked for presence of water in fuel?
Valve clearances checked?
REPLACED spark plugs (as opposed to just checking them)?

Check the diaphragms in the carbs and if you take them out make sure
you put each one back in the carb that it came out off.

Often a plug will spark when its out, but under compression it wont. Make sure you rule this out..

Hey,

Ive got a GPZ400R. When i got it all back together and tried to start it, after months of been in the shed, through winter, it refused to start. Taking the carbs out revealed the problem. They where full of shit.

If its sparking, and u've had new plugs then that can be ruled out.

My best guess is carbs full of shit.

Cheers,
Shaun.

does it keep trying to fire up and then stalling after a bit?.

try shaking the bike from left to right when you start it up to get some petrol into the float bowls in the carbs from the petrol tank.

that happened with mine once when it hadn't been ridden for a bit.

thats a tip i was given by my mechanic once and it worked.

might not be the problem but worth a go.

might need a new battery as well.

I shouldn't pay too much attention to the compression thing. If it was running fine then suddenly it isn't then unless you have a broken camchain it's nothing to do with compression. Loss of compression is something that usually happens over time due to engine component wear.

Agree with Geri - if it was working one minute and not the next, it'll usually be something trivial. My suggestion is always to try and start the thing off a car battery with jump leads. Could be that the battery output has slowly deteriorated to the point where it won't quite spin the motor fast enough and make sparks all at the same time. Charging it up is always a good thing but won't actually help in those circumstances.

You haven't left the kill switch in the stop position have you??

Has it been sat for a while, if so you may need to fill the carbs back up using the "prime" function on the fuel tap if it's vacuum fed.

Could be that the fuel has gone off if it's been sat for a month or so, or just have shitty deposits in the carbs.
