Was out riding with some mates and we got pulled. The officer was unimpressed with my plate angle aswell as my mates but he had a cut down plate too. Now my original numberplate fitting was ripped off in an accident so I made my own bracket. It also cannot be tilted any closer to the floor. My mates numberplate bracket is a complete unit with the LED brake lights. My mate argued that it had passed numerous MOT's as it was but according to the officer it was different regulations. He said our numberplates must be 90 degrees to the floor. Now I have L plates and if my numberplate was 90 degrees to the floor with an L plate then it could hit the tyre! (my bike is used off-road aswell), Well anyway he said the only reason to have our plates at such an angle is to avoid detection so I got a fixed penalty while my mate got a fixed penalty for his illegal plate. Ironically my plate was actually at 90 degrees before I went out cos the bracket had bent when I was out offroad so I fixed it because I didnt want to lose a 15 quid numberplate and in the end I got a 30 quid fine!! I also did not have my rear L plate on the bike because it had come off and the duck tape was no longer sticking but I did have it on me and I told the officer but he did not ask to see it (didnt care). I got a warning for that for which I am gratefull but im wondering should I appeal against the fine. I know if I did win I would prob get done then for not having my L plate displayed but Id rather 3 points than a 30 quid fine as I am overdrawn and dont have a job (laid off) and I dont want em gaining money from me! Not only that I need a new tyre extemely soon (I think its on the limit so im lucky he didnt spot it!).

What do you think? I mean Ive seen kit cars with their numberplate on the bonnet and yet it still passes an SVA and MOT!!

Load of crap IMO. Never heard of such a law, I'm sure someone will prove me wrong in a minute. My plate isn't 90 degrees to the floor. Can think of very few bikes that are.

Did he measure it with his EU standard issue protracter(sp)?

As you just started biking i'd say just pay it and don't worry about adjusting it...... you don't want points already, it'll put your insurance up.

Hi

Not sure on the rules on numberplates, but if you got 3 points for the L plate then you would get a £60 fine with that.

All the best

bastards!!

I didnt think points for an obscured plate would increase my insurance. I was gonna check... I have 2yrs no claims and my insurance is less than £100 a year..

They got me by the balls it seems... Evil or Very Mad Evil or Very Mad

More pissed off that I couldve easily got away why he tried to catch up with my mates who were way ahead of me...

And nah he didnt measure anything. He said straight away that my plate was legal size just that I had angled it in such an way to "EVADE DETECTION" or some crap?!? My mate got a fine for illegal plate and said he also had to replace the bracket so the plate is 90 degrees while I got fined for my bracket (prob because I wouldve been worse off for not displaying my L plate?)

looking at your avatar your plate is at a perfectly normal angle for the type of bike thats its on, there are lots of bikes with plates like thats round here and i have seen some drive past the police and not get pulled. If I was you I would apeal . If you dont win you could allways say its at that angle so it looks normal when you are wheelying. Laughing
lol.

Hes called officer dick now Laughing

He even asked my occupation and STILL gave me a fine Thumbs Down

He said because If I fine you then you'll tell your mates and they'll sort their plates whereas if I dont fine you then you'll tell all your mates you got off Evil or Very Mad

SHOULDVE TURNED AROUND AND RODE THE OPPOSITE DIRECTION WHEN I HAD THE CHANCE! Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

Does anyone know how where I could get free legal advice?

Also plan B... Can I pay off in installments like £5 a week because i cant get no money out the the bank (maxed overdraft)and I get like £80 a fortnight .. Lets see how long I can drag this out Middle Finger Mr. Green

Also might take the pics to where I pay the fine and ask them what is so obscured about that and see if I can blag it that way Cool

Not sure but I think the only way you can pay off your fine bit by bit is if you get fined by a court. Of course if you appeal and lose you're probably going to have to pay an increased fine plus costs.

Prob just a tad over 45 degrees. I cant decrease it because of the way its mounted.. Also when I sit on the bike it lowers a fair bit also decreasing the angle surely?

About 60, no wonder the cop pulled you! I think he was harsh in giving you a ticket but you were asking for a pull. Try not to be conspicuous, I run on un-silenced exhausts but ease back on the throttle if Plod is about.

Nice looking bike though Very Happy

Not had a problem in the past and they sell brackets that have the numberplate at a similar angle..

I think he was being light on me for not having my L plate to be honest.. He only gave a fine to my mate for an illegal plate though.. Mine was for plate being obscured..

Tbh one look at that photo and it screams "taking the piss" to me. And I really don't buy the fact you can't have it at more of a sensible angle...

I thought you were asking to be pulled after the first time I saw your avatar and it's not a suprise to me that a copper's had you for it. Tbh I would have thought that many would just have said get it sorted and let you off... But I guess you were unlucky.

Lucky you didn't get someone totally by the book or they may have tried to throw an additional penalty at you for the L plate!

They sell lots of stuff, number plates with a little servo motor that flips to a false number plate (I know a bloke with one of these).
Japanes Samurai swords, crack pipes.
Just because they are sold does not mean they can be legaly used.

What does the standard bracket from the maker do?

that R6 is about 20 from the vertical, in fact the slight tilt lines it up better for your GATSO snapshot.

thing is, NO bike is sold with the number plate at 90degrees (??to the road) and the copper was a dick but the plate should really be more noticeable, and the person at the counter you were considering blagging to, will probs just sit there and take your money, not care about your situation.
