I noticed my bike has been leaking oil recently, and it was starting to look quite a worrying amount so thought I better take a look. Removed the casing covering the front sprocket and have traced the leak down to the black thing (?) where the gear selector enters the engine - as you can see from the picture its not quite right!

How do i go about fixing this - can i tap it back in - if I do that will it keep coming out? or does it need replacing - if so is that difficult?

I did a check of the oil as thought it would have gone down quite a bit, and it has - its right at the bottom of the dip stick - any idea how much I need to put in?

Oh the bikes a Honda CB750 F2(T).

Hi

As above, bit should be easy to change (just did a similar seal on the clutch pushrod on Charlottes Thunderbird).

A touch concerned as to what has pushed it out. Have you run the oil level too high? Is the crankcase breather hose clear.

All the best

Keith

Slightly off topic but it's pretty much been answered anyway. Smile

It's easy because it's poking out and you can probably grab it with a set of pliers and rip it oot...but if it wasn't poking it, it's not a straightforward manouvre to remove it, is it? The clutch pushrod just pulls out if I remember correctly whereas the gear selector is fixed into the engine and requires somewhat slightly further work to remove it.

Unless there is a method of removing said seal when it is not poking out like that...? Would be interested to know. Smile

Normal idea is to put a small hole in it, screw in a self tapper a short while and then pull on that.

All the best

I tried the above method once and slightly damaged the crank casing Embarassed, nothing some silicone sealant/gasket material hasn't solved, but most seals don't have much behind them so you can push one side on making the other side pop out then you use some pliers to pull it out.

Just be careful the circle thing of metal doesn't stay on the bar (the metal thing inside the seal Wink). That's a pretty straight forward thing to change, shouldn't take any more than half an hour.

Drink a bottle of coke or something then cut about 2 inches of plastic out, then cut it down to fit inside the seal. This is just to protect it. I killed 3 seals by not doing this on the one seal i was changing. Oh yes, grease the inside of the seal too, and don't be careful with the amount, just slap it on.

You can then pop some silicone sealant/gasket material round the outer edge, push the seal in carefully making sure its perfectly straight during the whole process, so use a cog or something, or even the old seal and a big socket and a rubber mallet. Then push it, wipe the silicone sealant/gasket material that's come out around the edge to seal a bit extra, leave to dry and your done.

Think that's it, don't think I've missed anything. It's a little breif, but should give you the idea.

HTH Thumbs Up

Luke.

Looks like that part might be removable. In any case the seal needs removing and replacing - you simply tap the new seal home. Get your new seal and put it flat-side-out on the shaft. Now put the old seal up against it flat-side-in and use a small piece of tube to tap them in until the new seal is fitted flush.

Or just go down a general industrial/commercial seals and rubber place.

For direct copies of the seals i used from The Rotax Man, they were something like £5.25 each and from a local Seal place near my dad, got then at under £2 each i think.

Might save yourself a pound or so.

Cheers guys I get a seal or two ordered then - I'll see if there's anywhere local but the wemoto option will probably be easier and there normally pretty quick. I'll need to pick up some grease too then. I think it will come out pretty easy with some plyers.

Its actually this one I need but I expect its probably the same https://shop.wemoto.com/pictures.dyn?u=5835600qqq5828181

I'm not sure what caused it pop out - certainly didn't overfill it. I think it might have happened a week ago wednesday when I had to ride it work as the car was getting MOT'd - the day when it was really cold (before the snow) - I haven't been riding it this week anyway but haven't been able to look at it in the dark.
