Hi There,

Recently I've been idly wondering about my blown up RGV250. Is there something else I can do to it to make it better?

I've been thinking that if I've got to drop the engine and rebuild it, why not think about an engine swap? There is a kit which is readily available to convert the engine mounts to take an RG500 Gamma engine. Great I thought! Keep it a two stroke, mildly tune the new engine to 100bhp and I've got me a 500GP bike! Smile

So, I've asked around on the RGV250 forum, and there was a bloke selling an engine, carbs and ignition/loom for £1000. OK, a bit steep I thought, but he didn't reply to my PM's. In his ad he stated that it was going on ebay this weekend, so I looked on ebay.

almost six days to go... £1600 Shocked Shocked Shocked For a twenty year old 500cc engine. Yikes!

I knew that they were rare and precious, and I knew that they were a popular conversion for the RGV250 but blimey!

Shame really, I would have really enjoyed taking a stock looking RGV250 with a mildly tuned RG500 engine on a trackday. particularly at Cadwell, and particularly behind an R1 or something.

Sad

Now that you can't see the bidders i think a lot more people are bidding their own items up.

Hi

And you thought an RGV was unreliable and high maintenance. And you want a tuned RG500 engine instead.

Glutton for punishment.

All the best

But if you look at the bidding details you can see just who and what these bidders have been up to.
Like in this auction Bidder 4 has been pretty inactive of late and has only bidded on this item, but then has been a ebay member for 5 years with 100% feedback, just not a very active member.
You can of course report them if you think they are shill bidding via the same link if you view full details.

Well, that may be the case Keith, but Mr Stan Stephens recons he can get 30% more power from an RG500 engine reliably...

Quoted as 90bhp... so thats about 120bhp Shocked

I suspect though that the real figure is about 70bhp, in which case you're looking at about 95-100bhp.

I'm not certain that there has been shill bidding here. Why would anyone shill bid with so much time remaining on the auction? Secondly why would they shill bid to such a high amount when they might not get that much for it?

Its a damn lot of money for a 20 year old engine.

Hi

Think Suzuki claimed 90 odd hp, but the reality was a bit over 70 (depending on if the road test bikes were tuned, Suzuki got caught out with a tuned RG250 in their road test fleet, running RG500 pistons).

Remember the RG500 is a disc valve engine, and likely to have a rather more violent power delivery than the reed valve RGV250 engine.

Not sure if you could pick up an RG400 engine for a lot less (although they are less powerful).

All the best

Keith

There was an RS250 with an RG500 engine in it on ebay recently. It looked absolutely stunning. It had Gixxer front and rear enda, and a custom paintjob too. Easily worth £5000 of anyone's money!

A mate of mine is building an rgv500 using rgv barrels on the rg5 cases. Should be mental once its finished, was certainly quick on last years raf valley trackday...

(me behind.. oh the shame Embarassed )

But they are one of the fastest readily available two stroke engines (try finding, let along buying a yzr500 lump) for the money.

How much power can you squeeze out of the 250 engine? If you can get that up to 70-75hp in a vaguely reliabile tune (fortnightly rebuilds), and shed some weight, it should be noticeably quick.

74hp is the most I have seen, reasonably reliable (ie would last between rebuilds).

Mines around the 70 mark depending on the weather and how arsed I can be to jet it. Very reliable but an engines only as reliable as you build it and maintain it. You only get into trouble when things are thrown together and not checked, jetting is quite important for the weather conditions, especially if you are jetting it tight. A friend of mine binned his honda rs250 at snett at 120mph after it seized due to it starting to rain, after it was jetted for dry weather. Dodgy. I never run that tight a line, got enough to worry about! Laughing

Max is about 70, but that is probably with hourly rebuilds!

I reckon I could get more from an RD350YPVS lump... but its fitting that is the problem!

RD350YPVS engines can be tuned to crazy power...

Maybe I'll just get my RGV engine rebuilt... Smile

As I said, Colin S has 74hp from his rgv, its reliable too. Engine rebuilds are done to a mileage/meeting. I did mine at 3 meets for a set of rings, 6 meets at a set of pistons and a crank every season. No failures. The majority of high hp gp bikes have similar maintenance charts too..

YPVS lump isnt too bad to fit, a few people have done them but you arent really getting much more power and the engines are heavier and old tech.
