what do I do - re. road tax/SORN

I have a slight problem with my bike. The road tax has now expired, and I was all set to get an MOT and get it renewed, but I sprained my right ankle last week and it's not recovered enough for me to ride the bike yet. So I can't get it in to an MOT place. Which means that my MOT and road tax have now both expired. Confused

I was going to declare it SORN, but I see it takes 4 weeks to get a letter through for that? I hope in 4 weeks time my ankle will be OK and the bike will have been for it's MOT and got new road tax!

What should I do?

Hi

You normally have about a month free after the tax expires to declare SORN, but it is the DVLA so the are likely to change their minds when they smell the money.

However you can declare it SORN online.

You will need your V5C and / or VED renewal form.

Once you are back on your feet remember that the first thing you need to do is book your bike in for an MOT test. You are legally allowed to ride your bike to the test station for a pre-booked MOT, even without any tax, but you must make sure you have insurance.

Once you have got your MOT certificate you should then tax your bike straightaway. If you get caught riding it (apart from to or from the MOT station) without MOT or tax you will get the book thrown at you**.

**The book these days normally constitutes of a slap on the risk and a fine of approximately £4.67 including court costs. In fact its not even a deterrent so I am surprised anyone even bothers with MOT, tax, insurance and even passing a driving test! Shocked

As I understand the SORN rules you either have to have the vehicle taxed or SORN'd by the day after expiry of the the old tax disc. There is no "period of grace" any more. Mate of mine got fined £80 one week after his tax expired as he forgot to SORN the car.

ok, so SORN has to be the way to go. Just did it online, and didn't get any kind of warning message on screen. Hopefully this means Keith is right and you have a 1 month grace period!

Now just need to wait for the ankle to fix....

as already mentioned there is no "grace" period.
they can slap you with an 80 pound fine any day after you're tax has ran out if the notion takes them.
