You'd be happy with f*ck loads of unroadworthy cages everywhere when you're playing on the bike? I wouldn't be.

They goverment are trying to offer a sweetner on road pricing by comprimising on safety. There are people who drive for months with no brake lights until mot day, thats just the lights what happens when it no brakes for months are they relying on darwin???

For some reason they think that everybody has there car serviced by somebody who knows what they are doing regularly, there are plenty of crap mot stations who are licenced, anybody can offer a service facility. I've had to replace brake pads a month after mot day because they were on the metal and I wouldn't want to put my kids life at risk for the sake of a few quid.

Prize cock ends.

Who are these 'Ministers' and what do they know about cars? Why do they insist on putting so much faith into modern technology? I wish they would put a little thought into what they're inflicting on everyone. Just because it might look good on paper doesn't mean that it will in anyway work in the real world.

NZ is currently a little bit more strict:

Quote:

Warrant of fitness inspections
What is a warrant of fitness?
A warrant of fitness (WoF) is a periodic safety inspection that is compulsory for light vehicles (eg, most cars, vans, utes and 4WDs).

Vehicles first registered anywhere less than six years ago must have WoF inspections every 12 months.
All other vehicles must have WoF inspections every six months.

For new cars maybe, but even then back to every year once the car is past a certain age.

Doubling the capacity of the MOT system isn't going to do any favours for congestion, all it'll mean is the government get more in fuel duty and road tax.

Fuck relying on modern technology for a laugh.

I still remember my driving instructor telling me that learning to slow down through going down the gears wasn't necessary as "modern cars have very reliable brakes."

Pratt didn't seem to realise that not all of his pupils would be stepping into 54 plate cars.

Within the month I'd had 2 sets of brakes go on me; situations I was only able to save because I was aware of the principles of engine braking (and in one, terrifying, ton plus, slip road incident, the braking qualities of a friendly hedge) that saved me from a rather terrible accident.

Modern cars are probably capable of working fine for 2 years between MOT's, but not everyone's driving one.

Many old cars aren't capable of even one...

Fuel tax will go up as the cars become more economical - they'll need to bridge the gap in the deficit from selling less fuel.

For sure, im sure after 12 months they have to re-register the car to uk plates and all other uk motoring law applies including tax,mot etc.

The only people that will save money are those that get there cars serviced regularly. And most people dont from what i see day in day out, people driving round with the cords of their tyres hanging out etc
I hope this new plan doesnt happen, one because i'll be less busy and two because someone will be killed by an unroadworthy car. Rolling Eyes

Hi

I hope it does come in. We have about the strictist MOT type regime in Europe.

Remember an MOT is only proof of condition at the time it was done. Not a week later (and I have had a car use a set of front brake pads in normal use in under 5000 miles). Does nothing for someone who has a bulb go on their way back from the MOT (and I have had a bulb go on the way to an MOT last year). For that you actually need to pull people over and tell them (which doesn't seem to happen these days). Most people drive round with dodgy lights because they do not know.

£50 a year is a nice amount to save. Over all the vehicles floating around in a road worthy or close to road worthy condition I would save £450 a year if I MOTed them every other year rather than every year.

Older cars are quite capable of going for as long without major work as newer ones.

Having yearly MOTs is not doing anything for non UK registered vehicles, or for ones that are being driven round without an MOT.

While in theory you should reregister a car locally within a set time period, you can bet that many don't. Quite common when I worked in Belgium for people to have UK registered cars, and get away with it for years (just don't park it on the road in the same place every day). And plenty of those hadn't had MOT or tax for years either.

All the best

Keith

I really hate modern cars , because you need some special computery device to get the
service ME message off the dash board display, my dad is perfectly capable of fobbing
the service onto the guy across the road , but can't get rid ot the message which is annoying.

I'd go with the older one though , as many people will say older cars = less to go wrong, the only
major improvements are probably LEDs instead of filament bulbs as they semi last forever,

and also the Hassock style suspension system which BMWs use a variation of.

While things like ABS , servo assisted brakes , gimbal mounted head lamps, tracton control
etc all have benefits but maintenance wise I reckon are much harder than just using road skills
to compensate.

Quite easy to get the reset tools for plenty of modern cars. Agree that older ones are often far easier to fix and with far less to go wrong.

All the best

Our NCT over here already works like that. First done when a car is four years old, then done every two years. For older cars, it's every two years from the date of manufacture. The system was only brought in a few years ago.

I find that if someone is selling a car with only a couple of months NCT left on it, they'll find it very difficult to sell. Whereas, if the car has the two years NCT on it - people are much more willing to buy it. Obviously because it means the don't have to add in the extra expense of putting the car through the test after they've bought it.

The NCT can only be done in official NCT centres too - so if you want to do a pre-test check, you have to bring it to a garage first for them to check. It can all work out quite expensive, especially if it doesn't pass the first test and has to go back for a re-test, because they charge for that too - after you've fixed whatever problem caused it to fail.
