Makes for some quite interesting reading. Thumbs Up

https://www.tescopoly.org/

Quite a lot of the links at the side are a good read too.

'Interesting readiing' is research into or a debate about a possible monopoly held by Tesco, or alleged poor practices they carry out.

This, is just biased reading.

So what? Tesco had their downfall in the late 80's, early 90's. They come back building stores left, right and centre and now they are one of the most powerful companies in the UK. Not like it's been plain sailing for them all the time.

Also, they are still one of the most competitively priced supermarkets out there, so it's not like the UK population are suffering as a result. Unlike Microsoft where there is only one or two companies of opposition.

I don't mind Tesco having a monopoly in the current state, I like their shops. I don't like the adverts though. However my second favourite cheap supermarket is probably Morrisons, they are pretty cheap as well.

It's no wonder that companies like Sainsbury are suffering as a result, I have to shop there every week as I have no transport and their prices are hideous. Only advantage are the amazing Nectar cards are taken there.

A very sad fact (for me anyway) is that my great granddad owned the market stall next to the one that was owned by the guy who eventually opened the first Tesco store.

While he was making the transition, he offered my great granddad a half share in the new shop, but, having bills to pay, he didn't fancy the risk.

Had he gone for it, I'd be in line for half of the entire business right now.

Arse.

The sad fact is that the highstreet is changing.
Has changed a great deal in the last 40 years.

We are now in the era of super/hypermarkets, and I guess there's little we can do about it.

I have bemoaning the loss of small shops for years, but on the other hand, I have clothed my 17 month old son, and myself, for a fraction of the cost that it would have done in 'the old days'

Yesterday I picked up a pack of 3 cotton long sleeve T-shirts, for him, for £1.50

Tomorrow night I will pay £1.60 for a pint of bitter, or £2 for a lager.

I wish something could be done, but in the end they actually give us more jobs than separate shop could.
They give us more choice (for now).

I wish I could avoid them, but it's damn hard.... Its a choice between Tesco/Asda/Morrisons/Sainsburys for half an hour,
or down the town centre, for 2 or 3 hours.

*Edit - I would certainly advocate many of the views expressed though.

I prefer to leave the shopping to the domestic staff.

Indeed, they do sell clothes uber cheap and I'm guilty of buying stuff from ASDA (George range) before, but at what price....

I've got a 24 hour ASDA half a mile from me. I can almost smell it from here!

I love Asda, because it's cheaper than Tesco, and so when I'm in Brighton that's where I'll shop.

When in Essex, I shop at Lidl, because not only is it supremely cheap, the quality of the food is, genuinely, brilliant, up there with M&S I'd say.

I find everything they do brilliant; they do a ready made lasagne (about a kilo) and it's bloody lovely for 2 quid, lasts about 2/3 dinners depending how hungry I am!

Also their pasta sauces (particularly Tomato and Marscapone) are some of the best I've tried.

Oh, and did I mention its cheap??

Need to find me one in Brighton.

*hits google*

I used to work for Sainsbury's (left last October) and you'll be surprised at how well they are doing actually! A lot of our customers were returning from being loyal "Tescoits" because they couldn't stand the hyper-market feel, the lack of offers, and the im-personal staff.

I reckon tesco's are in for a major fall in the next decade or so!

In fact there's two very near Brighton, one up in Hollingbury and the one in the marina (both are 24 hours).

I live very near Hollingbury, are you sure you're not talking about the 24 hour ASDA's at the Marina and Hollingbury.

I do fully accept I might not have seen them, because I did find the one near the Marina on my google mission, but no mention of anything near Hollingbury.

Also, I think I may have made a mistake, I may have been referring to Aldi as regards the particular products I mentioned, but either way, the general sentiments hold.

There's 5 tescos within 5 miles of me. I dont use em tho. We tried doin our shoppin there but you can never get everything on your list. For 3 weeks on the trot there was no mushrooms, another week they had no potato's. How can you run out of potatos?
Another problem we had was so called fresh produce going off days before the sell by date expired. We gave up in the end. Sainsburys get our money now. A few years ago we couldn't afford to shop at sainsburys, but we can now so that shows how much their prices must have dropped coz i'm on crap wages.
Another bugbear with tesco. They opened a tesco express on the main road just 1/2 a mile from me. Every morning theres a traffic jam because their lorry is parked outside unloading. The road isn't wide enough to allow hvgs to park and traffic to pass. More often than not theres cars parked outside the shop, so the truck parks on the pedestrian crossing to unload. The manager is oftenm seen arguing with the traffic warden thats theres nowhere else to unload, so surely its not a suitable location? Dont suppose tesco care really, as long as they get their wedge.

Of all the genuinely brilliant drinking establishments in Brighton, you chose a Lidl tucked into the arse end of nowhere?

Oh, and I went for a wee looky see last night and found it no worries; this is where my money will likely be going in the future...
