Posting on behalf of a good friend. I was there for the engine swap though, so I should be able to fill in any gaps.

Hi i recently had a low-side on my suzuki GSXR 600 SRAD 2000 model. I cracked the engine casing etc but while i was fixing it i tightened a nut too tight and cracked a section of the sump, it was a school boy error and one i am really regretting.

anyway as a result i got a new engine off eBay and did a straight swap. the engine ran fine and didn't have any problems with it. I'd ridden a few times and then took a long trip of around 100 miles. I got there fine.

Later when we left to travel the 100 miles home it was raining like it has never rained before. we rode through it, and once on the motorway it wasn't too bad, anyway about 80 miles later i was coming off the motorway (after filtering through heavy traffic) up the slip road, pulled the clutch in to stop and the engine died, just died.

I think the lights stayed on etc tho, so i tried to start it on the button and it wouldn't fire up. tried lots of times and tried to bump it but no luck. until the battery died on me.

So i trailered it home, the next day i tried again, batt was still dead but i bumped it and it ran ok, so i took it for a ride and it was ok until i got around 10-20 miles on it and this time it just spluttered and died, again wouldn't restart but i left it for 20 minutes and this time it started again on the button. so i took it home. clearly somethings not right, I left it for about 2 months. then changed the battery, had a look at a few things like to make sure i had reconnected the new engine properly and I had, so I tried again and took it for a ride.

The bike ran fine, no problems, until i got 20 miles into my journey and again I slowed down at a roundabout, changed gear let the clutch out and gave it slight throttle and it died, didn't really splutter this time just cut out. again wouldn't restart. so i trailered it home and here i am. i don't know if the engine is the factor, or the VERY heavy rain. does anyone know what it might be, I'm just trying to problem solve

So basically, we swapped this engine for an unknown quality eBay engine. It started up fine, he rode it a bit. Then took it on a long journey (100miles+) then in the absolute pissing rain it cut out and wouldn't re-start. Even with bump-startage.

And it's happened a couple of times since, sometimes it'll start on the button, sometimes not.

Most times it seems to get about 20 miles before cutting out.

It's a carbed model, but 20 miles is too far for float bowl starvation. I suspect it's an electrical problem possibly in the coils? But I fail to see why it'd only kick in 20 miles into a journey.

Any suggestions appreciated.

majority of the electrical connectors on the srad are on the left hand side, so when the bikes on its side stand its leaning left and the rain tends to affect the electrics, also if its been stood for a couple of months it may be aswell to strip the carbs and give them a good clean.

I don't think it's water getting into electrics, it's been in a heated garage for long periods in between..

To me it sounds like dodgy fuel or a dodgy spark, pickup or coil.

Intermittant errors are crap!

Gazdaman check there are no tight bends in the fuel lines. I've seen this before where the heat of the engine causes fuel lines to soften and kink on a bend when the engine heats warms the pipe up, the pipe returns to it's shape as it cools. It's a well-documented fault on early hayabusas.

While the fuel lock is not likely, it is easy to check. Trigger it into doing it again and open the fuel cap and listen for a sucking noise. Then try turning the fuel tap to prime and starting it again.

However, what was changed with the engine. Complete engine with all its attached electrics? Or was the ignition transplanted from the old engine.

One other thing that may be worth checking is the valve clearances, if this is happening after a decent thrash. Hotter = closed up clearances = stuff all compression when they are too tight anyway.

All the best

Keith

Knowing the way the lad rides it will have had a good thrashing.

Thanks for both suggestions I'll pass them on.
