I saw a prog once when they put a load of mobile phones in a caravan, actually sitting in bowls of petrol, doused the 'van in petrol, basically made it as fumey as possible, then retreated to a safe distance and rang the phones.
Nothing happened. |

I've always been dubious about this too.
I think it was the situation that somone used a mobile and caught fire once, and since then they've adopted a better safe than sorry attitude.
I posted about this on a car forum once. Apparantly there was a TV show which conducted an experiment.
They filled a caravan with petrol, completley doused it. They put about 30 phones all round the vanand set them all ringing. Nothing
Then they connected a wire from the van to a guy in a polyester top 200 yards away. He rubbed his top and touched the wire, BOOM!

apparently the big old 80's mobiles used to cause a lot of static or something. Modern phones arent anywhere near as bad. my phone rang in the petrol station yesterday and nothing set on fire |

The real reason they don't like you using them is because it interferes with the telemetry on their pumps and can make the payment system go haywire.
They used to complain about the same thing when people fitted burners (signal amplifiers) to their CB radios back in the 80's, it used to bleed through the speakers in your car and such, wreaked havoc with automatic pumps. Whilst it might be possible to induce enough current in a metal object to throw an arc using radio waves, everything in a petrol station is earthed to within an inch of its life.
If there was such a fire risk in petrol stations I am damned sure you wouldn't be allowed to run an internal combustion engine in them. My motorcycle produces eighteen electrical sparks per second. ____________________ “Rule one: Always stick around for one more drink. That's when things happen. The 'offical' answer we give to Joe public when asked about this, is that people tend to get distracted when talking on the phone, and lets face it, getting distracted when filling anything with a potentionally explosive subsance is a BAD idea. ____________________ I spend all my money on bikes and beer, the rest I simply waste! |

Re: the above video... Mythbusters Proved that re-entering a car during refueling was likely to cause a static discharge at the end of the fuel pump, in turn causing an arc and possibly an explosion.
The reason behind the phones being banned was exactly as stinkwheel said. They interfered with the counters, and petrol stations lost money.

It is against the petroleum licencing act to use a mobile phone anywhere on the forecourt, that includes next to the fuel valves!
The guy should have asked you to leave the forecourt/kiosk completely or asked you not to use your phone whilst there!
