I'm getting really frustrated, I cant seem to find a suitable car second hand, and my budget doesn't stretch high enough for new. I need to buy a car pretty soon as my mother goes into hospital and wont be able to drive for a while (I am needed for hospital runs/ to bring my sister over to visit with baby).

I am resisting the old banger route as in a few months time i'm going to be going for a lot of interviews, hopefully get a job and generally want a better car this time round (had a £400 citroen ax).

My only requirements are as follows

Price close to or under £1750

    Insurance group 6 or below

    Power steering

    ABS Brakes

    4 Doors (5door hatchback)

Engine size 1.4/1.5 petrol, or up to 1.9 diesel (not turbo)

Under 70k miles on the clock

Not so ugly that I want to kill myself (Matiz anyone?)

Please if anyone has any ideas then I would really appreciate your time to respond, getting quite desperate.

From my research so far, people want too much for their VW Polo's (although the ones without PAS and ABS are cheap), all the mazda 323's i've looked at so far look tired, all the Peugeot 306's have high milleage (although this still looks like my best option), Suzuki Swifts are too rare, same goes for mitsubishi colts..

Fiat Punto, although not sure whether they are only 3 door?

https://www.custom-carhire.com/Vehicles/Fiat%20Punto.jpg

Funky, still fresh looking even in the yellow Wink cheap to insure and run (although being Italian, the build quality isnt fantastic), shed loads of parts available still and you should have money left over to pimpify it too Laughing

The budget may even stretch to the cabrio too Thumbs Up

Tried a punto as a hire car, found that space in the back was very lacking. I did have two 6ft blokes in the back though.

Limiting yourself to insurance group 6 makes pretty much every car ugly anyway, the only thing I can suggest is spend an hour or so on ebay having a look at different cars (narrow it down to exactly what you want with the search options).

or go to www.parkers.co.uk > insurance > group 6 and have a look at whats to offer.

There wont be anything remotely exciting or good looking in group 6 and under though, just standard, boring crap.

I was just going to say that by trying to keep the cc and ultimately the insurance grouping down is going to leave next to nowt on the car front other than a small box on wheels.

You'd be surprised at how cheap some insurance quotes can be on a larger cc car.

I remember reading the Parkers guide and constantly flicking from one page to the next when on the hunt for a new car, as like you, I wanted to keep the insurance down. Next thing I knew, I was driving a Scooby Impreza Thumbs Up Razz, almost fell over when I found out that I could afford it.

Ring round for insurance a bit. Try some quotes on higher performance cars with companies like high performance and Adrian Flux. Direct line wanted 1600 TPFT for a Saxo VTR, High Performance wanted 1400 FC for a 96 3.8 v6 camaro.
