Hi

£5k would be enough for a lhd Maserati Ghibli 2L with a bit of searching. 306hp as standard.

Also be enough for 5 decent Lancia Dedra turbos.

All the best

Keith

309 Gti, Renault 19/21 efforts, 405 Mi16?

Those would be my choices.

i'd be tempted by an old bmw 6 series, or maybe a 5 series (only the quick ones though)
or what about a mercedes 190 cosworth?
come to think of it, you can probably pick up a nice jag xj6 for 5k these days.

heres a nice bmw 6 series

Rs2000's a 2 door hatchback. 5k's enough for a half decent sapphire cossie and there are plenty of early imprezza's for that sort of cash. My little bro picked up a 96 wrx ra (the lightened jobbie for under 4k (he did have to have the bumper painted and the import restrictor removed as it would go over 112mph)

Don't touch any of them french jobbies though. Wink

I would say Saab 900 Turbo, but I'd be worried that you might rate my post redundant... Rolling Eyes

If it was me, I'd be erring towards the cars which you don't think are fast but actually have some go. non WRX imprezas aren't that quick, and may draw attention from the blue light brigade like genuine ones do. Same for the Evo really, real police magnet.

Hence why the Saab came to mind really.

Just looked at the superchips site and a chip will take it up to 220bhp... which isn't a huge amount but it will be quick!

An Audi A4 quattro will be reasonable price... not the S4 you'll pay a lot and insurance won't be cheap.

Again, you can probably chip it to another 30bhp for not a lot.

The chip power gain doesn't include Zaust or airbox mods, suspect cars about ten years old would need a de-cat.

I really fancy a street sleeper when I have to get rid of the MR2.

At the moment I'm leaning towards a Toyota Altezza... which is a Lexus IS200 with all the luxury taken out and a 2l 4cyl 220bhp VVTi engine put in place of the rather grandad like 150bhp 2l straight six.

How on earth can anyone get less power out of a six than a four ?!? I suspect the IS200 has tuning potential but it would be expensive.

The beauty of the Altezza is that if you get bored a MR2 turbo or GT4 turbo lump drops right in, as they are nearly the same engine. These can be bumped up quite a bit (600bhp some say...)

The Reason Altezzas and IS200's are so good is that they are rear wheel drive, as all cars should be. I have a feeling the saab is FWD although you are free to correct me.

Sorry its the 9000 turbo thats the really quick one, not the 900.

You can get it up to 230bhp with a chip. Zaust and de cat etc, you could have yourself a really quick car.

5K would get you a reasonable Sapphire Cosworth, Cavalier 4x4 Turbo, early Evo/Scooby, some of the sportier options.

For that sort of money I'd be worried that they'd been thrashed to hell and back, especially the Cosworth.

I owned a 1987 Sierra XR4x4 Turbo Techincs TT230, it was 3 years old and it was lush. It was a 2.8 V6 with a big Garret bolted on with an intercooler and some real cool Koni gas adjustable shocks.

There are still a few around at a very good price, but 'AutoTrader' won't yeild them, you need a retro car mag or Fast Ford mag.

Anything like that will be thrashed to hell and back generally, but should be able to cope with another bit before it goes bang.

Best car for that money is an Impreza or a Celica GT4. Just enough cash to be out of the banger end of the market and both very reliable fast cars if you leave them relatively standard.

A 5 grand cossie would be a bit of a pig in a poke. If you know what to look for you'll get a nice 4x4 saph (better engine than the 2wd). Rough Escorts are just creeping into this price bracket but i wouldn't touch one. And 3 doors tend to be total sheds or 10 grand minters with not many inbetween. Great cars but getting long in the tooth.

Cav/Calibra turbo's are a bit old hat now and have a crap 4x4 system. Still, you can buy an absolute minter for 5 grand.

Decent skylines just about start at that price but it's a risk. Even a good one costs a fair bit to maintain.

The saab is another good choice but a bit dull.

You won't get a decent Cossie, Scooby or Evo for that kind of cash. You will almost certainly get an RS2000, Cav Turbo or older Scooby but to be honest, I wouldn't touch any of them. Chances are, they will all have been owned by some 20 year old chav who has kicked the c*nt out of them. To buy one would be like opening Pandora's box!

A decent Cossie thats been well looked after will cost at least £7500, a decent Scooby thats been cared for £7500 and I think you'll struggle to find a Cav or RS2000 that hasn't been ragged to near death.

If I had his £5000 to play with I'd avoid all those and go for this, not a saloon but a sporty little hatch.
