Do they actually work?

Someone posted some Welsh in F&FW today, so being incurably nosy I stuck it in InterTran to see what it said. This is what it came up with:

welsh babble wrote:
cadw 'ch cega caea ai rhywun ewyllysia d a CAEA 'i atat ya hurtyn fucking benyw genetal arwynebedd. a s pawb Ca at ddeud acha a

Shocked

InterTran wrote:
keep ' dogs mouth shut or someone I will heartburn I go SHUT ' I to ya stupid fucking female bbering surface. I go sound everyone I Have to say astride I go

Laughing So either it was a really bad attempt at an insult, Welsh is a truly odd language or InterTran is pants!

babelfish and most of the other online translators don't do Welsh so couldn't check it anywhere else. Sad

So, who's crap? The translator, the Welsh language or the person who posted it?

Welsh obviously, it stands in 2nd place of world’s worst languages, right behind Arabic and just ahead of French.

How about:
Keep that bitch quiet or I'm going to have a heart attack. Shut your stupid female blabbing. I've now said what I wanted to say, so now I'm off.

Badly!

I know someone who is a freelance transaltor and conveying meaning/sense/subtlety is something that machines will never be able to do.

Written language is not just black and white, it takes on cultural refernces and idioms.

An example would be to translate a pun; which is pretty much nigh on impossible as two words that sound alike in one language pretty much wont sound alike in another!

The may be able to give a rough gist of simple text, but that's about their limit.

In short, no.

The opening paragraph in one of the most important works in Finnish literature, Vaino Linna's The Unknown Soldier, goes like this:

InterTran provided the following 'translation':

"Like much tiedetään , is God all-powerful , and faraway wise. So Anythbly oli once pass metsäpalon smoke ten hectare public forest eräällä hietakankaalla nigh Estuary town. Wont pursuance koettivat people very striving suspend Hers työnsä , only järkähtämättä anythbly distillery forest thus abroad alueelta like lo future tarkoituksiinsa fitted."

What do you mean you don't understand it? Laughing This is how the paragraph was translated for the English edition:

"As everyone knows, God is all-powerful, all-knowing and farseeing. So it was that He once let a forest fire devour several hundred acres of state forest on a sandy heath near the town of Joensuu. Men, as is their habit, tried their utmost to cut short His work, but inexorably He burned just as much of the forest as His plans required."

I've seen some rather surreal babelfish translations in the past. About the strangest one I ever came across was in 2001 when I was working for the germans. We were putting together a catalogue of power tool retailers in germany and I'd tacked on a babelfish plugin to see if it'd save us the hassle of making multi-language sites.
I abandoned the idea after an english->spanish->german->english translation of "You'll love our selection of new powertools" translated as "Our robotic cows will eat your liver" Confused

I didn't personally see it, but a mate of mine told me a story of how these things go wrong.

There's a show on the BBC called The Armstrongs (I believe this is it's name, but I've only ever caught the signed version after a night out).

If you haven't seen it, it's a bit like The Office, only it's for real; they own and run a company which makes and sells conservatories. And they're probably worse at people management than David Brent.

During one episode, or so I'm assured, they went to France to try to sell their conservatories to chums across the channel.

They, much like Techierob above, decided that an online translator would do the job, and would save them a lot of expense for a translator.

Unfortunately, the Translator came through with the word "conservatoire," which means "Music Academy."

Apparently the sales pitch was superb, as was the reaction of the French people, who were being sold Music Academies.
