PostPosted: 00:04 - 19 Feb 2007    Post subject: The £100 Trackday Car Reply with quote

Every year we help organise a trackday on the raf base where I work, for 2 years it was bikes/am and cars/pm. But last year after some hassle with the cars the previous year it was bikes only. Wahey! A good day to be had by all. Now this year its planned to be a 2 day event, cars on the saturday and bikes on the sunday. Good, keeps everyone happy.

Now, whilst enjoying a few beers one night I came up with a plan that would see us having fun on both days..

Why not buy a car to do the trackday with?

Fantastic, for £50 entry plus fuel/beer/burgers we could have another day's fun on the weekend, after all it would purely be for fun as the sunday would be my day for going fast.

So, discussed with my mate, we would go halves on a car.
The criteria for this car must be;
£100 or less to be spent on the actual purchase
Mot/Tax not needed
Rear Wheel drive
As big an engine as possible for the money
Not the usual track-weapons that people use.

Immediately I thought of an old jag, but it seems even mot failures fetch decent money. Looking down the old BMW route then.

I have seen a 525 with a for sale sign, advertised as 'No Tax, short mot' with 2 flat tyres Rolling Eyes £offers.. got to be worth a try as its local.

Can anyone suggest another car which will suit the criteria? I did consider using my transit but that is just too slow!

We will of course fit a cage, bucket seats & harnesses, make it safe, fit fire extinguishers etc. Oh and lose as much weight as possible!

Suggestions would be good though and will post the progress up as we get there (got a few months to go yet).

paul

an old sierra xr4x4 or granada cosworth or 2.9. any of them will be cheap to buy and prime for stripping out.

A shagged mk1 mr2. I'm sure you could find an mot failure. Only a 1.6 but they are light, you can shed quite a bit more weight, and they handle ok.

The granada appeals, like I said in one of the criteria, it has to be something that people dont use for trackday cars. Want to give people a giggle after all Laughing

keep em coming though, have considered a grannie before.

It's a bit over budget, but:
