How do those of you who ride all year round keep the pipes from corroding and getting furry during the winter?

Ta, Weedy Very Happy

got some gunk cleaner from wilko's of about 2 quid, after the daily commute, squirt this shit onto pipes n exposed metal, forks ect ect....and spray off with a hose. Not had any problems with the salt on either bike, but a but of rust inhibiter like w5 on paintwork/metal and grease inside frame tubing helps.............

Auto sol mainly but occasionally a polish in a blue bottle with a gold lid called 'mer'.

It's actually a car polish but using past experience (used to be a valeter). It actually works extremely well if polished on after auto sol and makes the finish last twice as long and doesnt make any difference regardless of how hot the pipes get i.e no bad smells or anything Thumbs Up

i polish mine once a month, mer claims to last for up to 6 months but with the constant high temp of the pipes i just do it every month.

I hose the bike down every day during winter and spray all over with Scottoiler preventative spray.

Its in a yellow container and a litre costs about £7.

Stainless headers are good.. Until you drop off a curb that's a lil higher than you thought, and punch a small hole in them (I suck)...

As for keeping the bike clean and shiny.. Why bother? Works fine caked in shite (obviously some parts need to be checked). I'd rather give it a good solid clean maybe once a year.. Not that I've ever cleaned a bike properly yet.

Hmm, my stainless pipes only dented when they met with a curb in France, trying to get out of a multi-story carpark without paying.

Mine wernt too rusty/brown muck when I brought it. But I leave the engine running for a few mins till the pipes are just luke warm.
Add Autosol - Wirewool and the jobs done - took 5 mins and a lil buffing up.

That's the thing. I wish I had the time/space to wash my bike every day, but it's just not a realistic proposition.

When it looks rusted, does it mean there's permanent damage?

And what are the replacement costs?

Dunno, spraying FS365 on stuff that looks slightly corroded seems to actually get rid of the rust for me!

I think it's extreme3d who doesn't hose his bike down after a ride and just coats it in FS365 instead, and his bike is shiny! Due to the salt inhibitors I think, I'm sure he'll be along soon.

ACF50 for the win... I cleaned my bike last October, sprayed it in the stuff and only just washed it now, left the salt dried on and kept the bike outside all night Very Happy Totally clean.

And it's a Suzuki GS Razz

Truth is, I actually like to wash my bike on a sunny sunday.

But when you get home on a cold, dark, rainy tuesday night after a bastard of a day at work, don't really wanna get my knees soggy and scrape the underside of my bikes......

Confused

I tend to have very little luck with exhaust systems, last bike blew, and the one before that just fell off (well, rusted off)! Very Happy

It's only a tiny crack along a weld. It makes it back-fire and have a strange, dirty lil pur at higher revs. Might try repair it before it gets any worse -Que post three months from now asking about new exhausts for my bike-

Much easier on a naked bike than a faired one - less bodywork to remove to get to them.

Well Kal does highlight another solution: Avoid rusted downpipes by not actually having downpipes!

Suspect the 4-into-1 for the 550 would have rusted up this winter if it was on the bike, but my homemade exhaust has faired pretty well.
