PostPosted: 23:32 - 21 Feb 2007    Post subject: Worse experience, ever... Reply with quote

I've been riding for a fair few years now. I've hit, or been hit by, most things you see on the road, I've suffered high speed blow outs, seized engines, and just about anything else you can imagine. I've broken numerous bones, and have left bits of skin and muscle on the road all over Europe.

But today I suffered from, what for me, was the worse experience I've ever had on a bike.

I've had a bit of a cough for a couple of weeks now. It only really affects me first thing in the morning and I've put it down to the time of year. I haven't smoked for nearly twenty years but it sound like I'm on sixty a day.

Anyway I leave the house and get about 5 miles away when I start coughing. Not unsual, but this time I can't seem to stop. It gets to the point where my eyes start watering so I decide I should pull over and sort myself out. Still coughing I start slowing down when, without any real warning, I throw up in my helmet.

Now this is not nice.

I'm trying to pull over, gagging, sick all over my visor blocking my view and with warm goop dribbling down my neck. Once I do pull over I then have the task of removing my helmet. Theres not many options here so I just have to go for it.

I've now got it on my hands, down my jacket, on the bike, over my face, in my hair, and just about every around me.

The only way I can sort of clean myself up is to take off my t-shirt and wipe everything down. This sounds easier than it was, I hate sick, it makes me sick.

Just to really rub it in, I then have to put my puke smelling helmet with the smeared visor back on to ride back home to clean myself up.

The only good part to this was the face of the woman that drove around me as I took the helmet off, I guess someone looking at you with there face covered in puke has that effect on people.

BTW febreze doesn't work on helmets.

Mate thats terrible, im really sorry to hear that, it really must of been rather horrid to say the least!

Sounds like an involantary reaction to consistant coughing, if you have a fit it can result in vomiting, thats actually quite common!

Do you remember a film called Morons from out of space.

It had a scene with an astronaut sneezing in to his helmet.

Yuck.

New helmet?

Well, I go a bit over the top with equipment and own 6 or 7 helmets at the moment. This one was a Nolan I brought a couple of years ago so not too bad. I guess I'll have to see what tomorrow brings(up).

Diarrhoea in your leathers is not cool either. Suprisingly it goes up your back and out of your neck into your helmet rather than down your legs. Of course some will go down your legs and I imagine if it is a real bad one it may come down your sleves and into your gloves as well.

Had a mate that was doing his first rally as a navigator and managed to throw up in his helmet not long after the start.
He had to keep it on for obvious reasons until they made the next check point.
He was none to happy I'll tell ya and pretty darned glad to get it off as soon as they stopped. Sick Sick

I apologise for laughing at your misfortune.

Laughing

Seriously, I really would have to buy a new helmet. Even if you did manage to remove the smell, psychologically it would still remain. When I had the misfortune of killing a pheasent with my head I could still 'see' the blood dribbling down the inside of my visor even though I had disinfected every part of the lid.

On a serious note, would the acid like substance in sick be enough to cause damage to the chin piece of the helmet affecting strength?

I left the helmet in the back garden but had to move it because the dog kept licking it Sick
Its now in a plastic bin bag where it will probably stay, unless someone wants to buy it?

If you can (mostly) get rid of the smell and you don't want to wear it anymore, have you thought about maybe donating it to your local St Johns Ambulance or Red Cross group, where they give training to specialists on how to remove lids from casualties? It's all for a good cause and it gets the thing off your hands.

Not exactly difficult, I've had a pheasant hit my leg when i've been on the bike, they will jump out at you at any moment. The admin of South West Bikers got hit on the head by a pheasant and he was lucky not to fall off as he was almost un-conscious.
