ok, well within the last few days, the starter motor has gone on the bike, so i have had to bump start the bike to get her going.

now i was on my way to a mates house when suddenly, my clutch cable decides to break, so to get the bike back home, to start up, it was a case of running with the bike jumping on it then putting it in gear, and with the added trouble of not being able put the bike in neutral, it got even more fun when the had to stop.

Next time that happens, heres a good trick:

Provided u have good gloves, take the cable out of the lever housing or grab it if you can (providing its long enough to reach) and wrap it round your hand, ride slow and yank to work clutch...Obviously if you cant hold the bars at the same time dont do it, that would be dumb, but hey it worked for me back in the day!

i did try this but the cable is only 2 inches long so wasn't really working

I seem to remember doing something similar, making a DIY throttle cable for one of my 1st cars some years ago. It was a bit dodgy trying to co-ordinate at junctions etc, but it got the car home to my garage.

(Apologies for it being a car based anecdote, but I only passed my DAS in 2005, and only had my bike for about 6 months, so still don't have many 2 wheeled experiences Embarassed )

but whats even worse is 1. i need it for tomorrow and 2. i am well up for a niht time ride now

in the morning am going to have a talk with the uni halls repair people (minds gone blank) to see if they can help bodge my cable back together.

run some decent string up the outer cable, nylon stuff is good and only cut it with a hot knife or it will fray) Tape it to the old cable and pull it through. Lash it to your lever and box and adjust untill it works ( it will not work that well as the string is stretchy as hell but it will work)

Push bike brake cable, 79p from Wilkos. Use with a solderless nipple - The inner brass part from a "chocolate block" electrical connector.

Is it just a coincidence that your clutch cable has broken or could it be due to the bump starting, ie too much shock loading on the clutch components leading to the broken cable?

No more "shock" loading on the cable than you would get when releasing the clutch quickly whilst changing gear.
