They're taking the hire bandit away on Wednesday.

I still don't have a replacement bike sorted.

They've given me 750 quid to buy a new bike, fighting for more will take ages.

I'm getting insurance quotes of over £2000 just to insure something like a 1999 Fazer (Which I was considering buying), and Bandits are the same price!

No one will tell me how much it's going to cost to buy my salvage back.

No one will tell me what I need to do to put my Divvy back on the road, should I want to.

Basically, I'm screwed. I have no way to get to Uni this coming week, or ever for that matter. Even worse, I won't have a bike at all!

Considering the woman that was in the wrong could drive her car away from the accident with nothing more than a smashed headlight, the shit that I am going through just doesn't make sense. There's no justice anymore Sad

God, if you're reading, little help please?

You need to get on the phone and speak directly to the insurance asessor. He is the guy that values the bike and can do a deal with you on both the amount of the payout and the buy-back cost of the wreck. He can do it there and then and they are prepared to haggle.

Arm yourself with some evidence of prices of similar bikes to how your was before the crash before you call. This is how much you should be payed out and he will know it, if it is a non-fault claim, excess doesn't come into it.

Sorry to hear things are still bad - insurance doesn't seem to work the way it should - you get 'compensated' but not for your actual losses - time and worry being the biggest ones?

Those insurance quotes seem ridiculous. Have you thought about something a bit smaller - GS550, CB500, ER5 ? I live in the Penylan area, the bike is kept in the garden chained up and I had zero no claims as I hadn't had a bike for a few years. Bike cost me £850 for a 2002 ER5 and then £310 for TPFT insurance from MCE.

You should be able to request the buy back value from the insurance company, as a copy of the damage report. Are these quotes from your current insurance company? When the girlfriend had her off the insurance company upgraded her insurance from an 03 SR125 to a 06YBR for just an admin fee, despite the value being double!

Hope things get sorted

Cheers

Dave

Is your insurance policy still running?

What about another XJ600? Should come in to the money you've got and should be relatively pain free to transfer cover if you still have it.

Have they found you to be partly to blame or is that still pending? I can't understand why they are loading your quotes if you weren't at fault.

They load your quotes until the claim has settled. I had the same problem. I had to renew my car insurance and pay £150 extra because my ncb had been affected. The money was refunded when the claim was finalised.

Thanks for the replies,

The other driver admitted to being 100% at fault (in legal terms). The insurance quotes are from my current insurance company - even the person I spoke to on the phone sounded shocked at the premiums.

A local dealer is selling a 1999 bandit for £1500, sounded like a decent enough deal until I ran an insurance quote on it and it'll cost £2,478.73 to insure!!

Seriously, what is going on? I'm sure my quotes weren't ever this high when I was dummying quotes before I got my Divvy.

Other driver admitted 100% liability?

If hire bike is being paid for by insurance company i'd not let them have it back until you have a replacement for the bike you lost.

Ring them and tell them, then contact Financial Services Ombudsman.

Keep all correspondence.

It sounds to me like the 2 insurance companies have done a deal between themselves, you being the loser.

Keep the hire bike, just make sure you tell them why. it'll get escalated from the minions to the people able to make a decision very quickly.

as said, who are these insurance companies giving you such silly quotes and are they fully comp??

Have you considered TFPT as the excess is likelly to be about a third of the bikes orignal price on a sub 1k bike?????

Always ring round different insurance companies and try to avoid online quotes (unless your going through an insurance comparision site)

All insurance companies have a "barter band" which is a % of the price they can use to haggle and beat another companies quote, that is why they ask you what your best previous quote was. Always always always put like 20% less than your actual best quote as it will force their lowest hand!

Hope some of the above helps a bit, i feel for your situation!

Unfortunately it doesn't work like this. The insurance company has compensated for the lost bike in the form of the cheque for its value and therefore they are quite within their rights to ask for the return of the hire bike - otherwise there's nothing to stop the hire bike used indefinitely.

As he is entitled to be in no worse a position today, as he was prior to the accident.

I'm not suggesting he rides the hire bike - just keeps it in order to escalate the problem within the insurance company.

It's the only lever he has left, short of chaining himself to the companys railings.

He said he didnt know what to do as no one was telling him anything, the person in the insurance company has decided that 'do nothing' is a valid form of crisis management, hoping the customer will drift away. If he tells them he intends to keep the hire bike, it'll get escalated and providing he is in the right he stands a good chance of a manager not wasting any further time on it and signing off the extra couple of hundered quid or whatever it is he has claimed.

Theyve got his money, he's got their bike.

They tend to be over the odds, that and you can haggle over the phone - which is very important with insurance company's Wink

Those quotes are waaay to high, give MCE a call.

How about the yellow one here?

I see, so if you were to do a bit of research into quotes on t'internet, then ring around the best ones to haggle them down, would that make sense?

Yea, also play the companies off of each other, say if one gives you a quote of £550, you then go to another company and when they ask what the best quote you've had is you say £500 and send them on thier merry way to ask the boss to beat that quote.
You have to be really cheeky aswell you wont believe what you can get away with Thumbs Up

I'm currently insured with Motorcycle Direct - and they're the ones that gave me a 2k+ quote. Also tried MCE and Bennetts and had the same problem.

Will try phoning them up tomorrow (Or Monday), will let you all know what happens, thanks a lot for the replies Thumbs Up

TPFT. TP only comes up at about 1k-ish but after the theft of my first bike my family won't let me get anything under TPFT coverage.

Just letting you all know how things are going;

Phoned my insurance company and asked them how much it would be to change the remaining 6 months on my insurance cover to a bandit and they said I'd have to pay an extra 50 quid! Which is great, so don't listen to online quotes, they're full of utter bollocks Mr. Green

As for actually getting a Bandit, a local dealer has one. 1999, unfaired, metallic blue. I'm paying 1200 cash (1000 of that from the insurance payout, 200 from my own coffers), and giving him the salvage from the crash.

He's putting new tyres on front and rear, new headlight, new chain, new sprockets, and putting it through a new MOT on Wednesday morning for me to pick up on Wednesday afternoon.

The only thing I could have hoped for really is a faired Bandit - it really makes a difference when you have to travel 20 minutes on the A470 every day to get to Uni and back but hey, can't complain about everything now can I?

Smile
