im having a debate about the above. he reckons his car will easily beat my bike. now his car according to the old tinternet will do 0-60 in 7.5 secs and he reckons it will do 140mph which he probably right.
now mine according to the internet will do 0-60 in 4ish secs and good for 135mph top end with the can and filter can probably get 140 at a push
so a 5 mile drag race which would have the edge??

his is standard spec
mine has performance airfilter and blue flame race can.

Hi

MGF has a top speed of 118 (steptronic version), 120 (normal version) or 130 (VVC version) claimed from what I can see.

On that you would romp away, although I would doubt your CBR400 would manage anything much over a true 130 in normal conditions.

Few more MGF performance figures here:-

https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/road_tests/index.htm?id=21

They list the quickest as the 160hp Trophy at 137mph.

All the best

Keith

These posts always confuse me - best way to find out is to do it Smile.

Ok, 5 miles may be a bit harder, but you should be able to get a decent result.

Bike should be faster at the start as you say, but will lose out due to aero dynamics later on.

You should easily beat it but try to make sure its from a standing start (or slower speed as possible) and maximise your accelerative advantage right from the start.

Mooncatt - Just out of curiousity, do you go to Squires Cafe? Because I saw a NC23 with the orginal blue/red/white fairings on, does your plate begin with the letter F and have "bye bye" underneath?

i had a rover 200VI with the same 1.8 engine and there quickish but being the same sort of setup as a vtec you need to get the revs above 4-5000 to unleash the power.

personally i thought it was a pap car and could never see it beating a 400 bike.

Five miles flat out? The MGF. The CBR would have the edge until around 115/120 I would have thought, where the car would begin to real you in (probably be travelling a lot slower at this point due to acceleration differences). After 5 miles, the MG's top end/aerodynamics, I would have though, would be the overall winner.

Clear roads of course.

Over 5 miles you'll get owned.

Over a mile or less you'll obliterate it.

A drag race over 5 miles then the car will be the only winner. Your bike may be quicker off the line, but the car can sustain a higher speed for the length of the longer distance.

That is the performance facts for you but if you take into account other factors such as the effect of that speed over that distance on the rider/driver, the rider is going to find it a lot harder to go flat out for five miles than the driver who will find it physically relatively easier being in a car rather than on a bike.

So no contest really, the car will win hands down.

It's only 5 miles, if a rider can't keep their head down and throttle wide open for that amount of time they deserve to lose.

To cover the 5 miles at top speed assuming your bike will do a constant 130mph and the car is doing 137mph, the car will cover the distance in 2 mins 11 secs and the bike will take 2mins 18 secs. If your bike can accellerate to its top speed at least 8 seconds quicker than the car then the bike will win.

This'll be about average speed, rather than top end, as neither car or bike could sustain a true flat out speed on the road - wind, road imperfections, corning, etc will all have an effect - and the car, I would have thought would be more adept at keeping speed.

I doubt the 400 will even touch a true 130 either, more or less sustain it.

Besides, why on earth would you think a 400's good in a straight line - race around Brands Hatch to really see what comes out on top.

There's your answer.

If your mate doesn;t know much about bikes, get hold of your dad's blackbird and stick a "400" sticker on it.

Twist the throttle and watch as his face melts.... Mr. Green
