Front row seat to bike crash, and rider disappears!

Hi. Here's an interesting story to share with you lot, and some questions to follow.

Walking along the road last night, just approaching a bend, I saw a bike approaching. I squinted at the lights, wondering what sort of twin it was. Engine note suggested it was cruising along. At the start of the bend, the lights dipped as the rider braked, and then suddenly the front end fell away, lights flipped over and there was an almighty roaring scraping sound as the bike sailed past me in a shower of sparks. It negotiated the bend perfectly, with the occasional silhouette of the tumbling rider behind it. Amazing noise.

So, everyone stopped, and ran over to help the rider. He was up immediately, trying to start the bike. I stopped him, as his front brake was torn off. He then had me help push the bike on the the pavement. All good so far. As he was wearing jeans, he had grazed his knee. He seemed quite unconcerned about the bike, or the crash, but said he needed to be on his way, and asked for a lift, or the number for the local taxi. And after having a chat with some of the local lads, he disappeared!

He left his gloves and key with the bike. Damn suspicious, but would a thief have a bike key and riding gear? Either he 'borrowed' it, or as someone suggested, was a DUI and figured a quick getaway was in order.

No-one else was involved. He should have made the corner, but I reckon he was taken by surprise. Very strange situation, and he was bloody lucky not to have gone into a car or guard rail. Bike is a real mess. I was told that it is not illegal to leave the scene of the accident if no-one else is injured. True?

Thieves will be brave enough nowadays to enter your house through an unlocked door, search through your jackets and house while your asleep upstairs.

once they find the keys they'll be gone with whatever they belong too, obviously the thief will need a helmet if he's going to be riding the bike away. the helmet was probably the owners too.



or as you said it was probably a DUI trying to leave the scene before the cops arrived. they'd have knocked on his door a few mins later and questioned him.

Yep, I am a primary witness. Left my details with the ambulance crew, who were called by a concerned bystander. Plod were in no apparent hurry, as there was no serious injury or other person involved.

Interesting aspect to this is that I had just had my second major ride, after fixing my new bike. Not the best advertisement for what can happen within a second's inattention. Not to mention £££.

I'm sure it is illegal to leave the scene of an accident, and the rider sounds like the bike was the last thing on his mind, I reckon it wasn't his, and he didn't want the onus of the consequences of his actions)or the incident) what happened to the bike?

It iznae illegal to leave the scene.
You only have to wait for the polis if a third party is injured.

EXCEPT of course if there is nobody to phone for the polis then you leg it.
(You have to inform emergency services by law when anyone is injured.)

So if you get knocked off, stay on the floor and keep saying, "Ah canny feel ma legs. Ah canny feel ma legs."
The person who caused the accident must then wait for police.
Those lazy sods don't want to come out the office for simple crashes. But they must come to an injury.


I think the guy has fell off the useless scrap heap before and is just fed up with it. Simple.
