Your skydiving experiences.

I know a few of you have done it so tell us your experiences! What was it like? Is it anything like what you expected?

Got a bit of spare cash around atm so I'm considering doing a tandem skydive at a place not far from here.

O and does anyone know the percentage of times a parachute does actually open? I have terrible bad luck you see.

i did my parachute course about 4 years ago and did 8 static line jumps ( where your clipped into the plane and chute deploys after 3 seconds )

was the best thing i ever did and would happily do it again.
only part that i didnt like was you packed your own parachute and it was stage checked at certain points to make sure it was all safe, but even after all the checks out of 8 jumps, 7 times my chute didnt open properly lol.

apart from that it was awesome, do the course, you wont regret it!!!!!!!!

I did a tandem jump from 15,000ft last year and I have to say it was the most incredible feeling. I'd recommend it to anyone . I really want to the Accelerated Free fall course but finding the £1300 is proving tricky!

I've always wanted to do it, but stupidly I watched a programme called "When Skydives Go Wrong" (Or something like that)

I've done a tandem in NZ on the South island. I got more of a calm just flying along looking about type of feeling. I didn't find it exciting so much as a relaxing this is pleasant type of thing.

On the other hand I scare myself shitless most times I go out on my bike.

So there you go. For me it was OK but nothing special. Of coarse it's good to land without the splat.

OK cool. So how many of you felt nervous before the jump? The whole settting up thing seems pretty nerve wracking. What should I expect when I turn up?

I'm pretty sure I wanna do it now, it's just physically booking it and that makes me feel a bit scared already!

I've always fancied para sailing and hang gliding, the skydive was the one i'm most nervous about, then again i'm always looking for new ways to get a thrill.

hmm I intend to make sky diving cheaper though my insane experiments, no parachutes , instead rockets!,

, you jump out of said aircraft @ 25000ft (requiring 02 of course) , and 15 metres above the ground a rocket pack fires and decelerates you from 125mph to mph , I mean if the Russians can do it using tanks .....

i havent much skydiving but smoked some crack once which made me feel like i was flying.

The freefall lasted for about 6 hours.

Yeah, tandem jump. With a well respected company aswell, so I'll be alright. Apparently the main chute takes half hour to pack but the reserve is packed so carefully that it takes around 2 hours to pack and is guaranteed to open.

Maybe the guy in the video just ran out of time before he had the chance to deploy the second chute or something.

But yeah, I should be sound with an instructor and no messing around.

I'll get it filmed as well and post it up when I get it. I'm well excited, can't wait now!

Subscribe to www.dropzone.com. That is THE skydive web site. There is a chat forum (I used to use a lot) and there are lots of good articles to read.

Reading up on fatalities is a good thing. You will learn form it.

Choice of 'type' of skydive you choose to do is very much up to you.

Tandem is a taster
Static line is dated
AFF is fantastic


AFF v Static line from my coaching experience:
X static line students are not so good at the free fall and tend to fly flat and wide, so have lots to learn (esp about body position) after getting their Cat 8 (first) licence. Whereas AFF students have had much more free fall experience.

Static line students are more confident with exits and getting out at lower heights. AFF is all done from altitude only one jump is form 3k (hop and pop)

I think static line is tougher because its all about the crucial exit, AFF students can get away with bad ones at first (instructord there to assist). However there is more to remember on an AFF jump.

Parachutes are designed to open and that's exactly what they do. They say to expect 1 malfunction in every 800 (approx).

Mals happen for 3 reasons . . . .

Bad packing
Bad maintenance
Bad body position on deployment

Any other reason is very bad luck.

I did AFF in California then progresses to become an FS (formation skydive coach) and to video Tandems Four way teams.


I've had 3 reserve rides in 700 jumps and they were all some how avoidable.
