I want to clean my PC of any trail I leave behind.

I know how to use the standard delete history temp files.

But I want to just run an app to do it.

I have downloaded free windows washer... that supposed to remove internet history, files opened, saved locations, autocomplete, cookies, and gives some control over what is loaded on start up. Anyone got anything else that might add to this useful tool.

I'm not too bothered about overwriting deleted files 20 times... just want to erase everything I've done or accessed.

What apps you all using to do the above?

Jamie, it is indeed possible to completely wipe a hard drive and retain usage. Whilst there are ways of reading the magnetic platters forensically there are no current techniques that would effectively retrieve a thoroughly hazed drive. The only reason many companies and government departments actually destroy hard drives is that the level of effort required to totally clean one renders the money gained by selling it a net loss.

It's not even particularly complex, all that is done is a steady stream of random data is sent to the disk. An imprint is only readable to 7 or 8 writes deep, write more than that (say 30 times) and the chances of anything being got off it are pretty negligible. Given that it takes around 6 hours to do this to even something as small as a 10 gigabyte drive then I'm sure you can see why people don't bother. It simply isn't cost effective.

found it.
cyberscrub pro, once you get download it, you have different options of deletion, the higher the level of deletion the longer it will take, but at least it will be gone forever. Not even the feds can recover it.

you can also delete the empty sections of your HD.

Thumbs Up
