ive had this little twinge for ages now, think it started somewhere in basic training, but it doesnt want to go away, its not majorly painful, but it is annoying

i was wondering if any of you had experience with ostiopath (no clue to the spelling) or physio people, how good they are? how much they cost? and do they actually work?

cos it feels like i need someone to just tweak something, but here is the other problem, i have no idea how to explain where the hell it is or what causes it to hurt, sometimes when you breath in deeply with your head in a certain position it hurts, other times when im lifting, running, working out, other times when im asleep, sometimes when i yawn, its just i have no clue how to logically explain what is wrong with me, but its so annoying

any suggestions?

Also make sure you get it looked at at work mate! It needs to go on official record!

Your problem could be caused or highlighted from anything from simple RSI/bad posture (from sitting at the computer) to as you say something you may have pulled in basic trainng!

Get it looked at all the same mate, and make sure the forms are filled in at work!

Don't the armed forces have the best medical facilities avaliable ?, no waiting times and all that stuff. If so get it done through the forces and as hex said it's probably best that it goes on record.

Yeah, I don't know much about the forces' Medical Facilities, but if you can I'd say get it looked at there? If not get to your GP or get Vicky to take a quick look at it. Very Happy

BTW Vick, thank's for poking at my back, even though we were laying in a tent in a muddy field it seems to be a bit better. Very Happy Also, like Vick said to me... Watch how you sit at your computer, it really does make a difference to your lower back. Smile

Hmm, the RAF facilities left something to be desired when I left 6 years ago. I was basically a case of 'here, have 500 brufen and go away'.
However when they do finally refer you to a physio, they use civvy ones now, so you should be OK.

like everyone else has said, get it checked out asap, my dad's currently got back problems, also currently thinking of surgery on his spine due to a constant problem with a disc in his lower back (constantly slips out of place in his spine) turns out that surgery isn't that good an idea Confused but all of these problems he's got with his back make's me realise that nobody else would want them, so go get it checked as soon as possible!

Well, I was never dissapointed with my ZXR. Very Happy It is the fastest (top end) of all the 400's - indicated 145mph - losing out only slightly on handling to the RVF.

Even if the medical facilities on site are rubbish. make sure that they are aware and the paperwork is filled out. I really can't stress this enough.

If no paperwork is done for it (even if its just a quick visit and nothing comes of it it will still be recorded) if anything does happen 5, 10, 20 years down the line that could have been caused by it you will have no come back.

Trust me I work with the paper hangers and it is for your best interests even if it does turn out to be nothing.

Well. Rolling Eyes The research states that there is no clear winner in which more is beneficial...Physio, Osteopath, Chiropractic. For solving spinal issues, all seem much of a muchness.

Now, my humble physio based view....

Well, you say that you dont really know when it started....
In itself that is a good thing. If it has come on gradually over the past few weeks, and is simply there occassionally to annoy you, it means that you havent injured anything severely. Its more likely that it is being strained due to your change into a more strenuous lifestyle recently, or possibly a secondary factor to an initially bad neck posture, hence becoming more painful.
(However, from what i recall, I think your neck posture seems alright TBH)

You say you can't locate the pain accurately....
This in itself is also another good thing. Which is normally more indicitive of muscle strains, which pull on the muscles at length. Rather that muscle tears, ligament strains, nerve irritations, bone damage; which normally tend to be fairly accurately located.

You say that there is no pattern to when it comes on....
This is also good. If it was a more chronic problem, it would be highly irritable, and you could definately pin-point certain movements that provoke it. Although you mentioned, deep breaths/coughing can occasionally bring it on. This is suggesting once again that it is a muscle strain, as alot of the muscles involved in breathing are stabilised from the neck. Perhaps suggesting an overuse of the natural stabiliser muscles that arent 'built' for hard work. Perhaps as a compensation for the strong neck muscles that are becoming tired by doing too much.

You also say 'it feels like somthing just needs to be tweeked'....
This is also good. Patients who normally say this are normally are normally fairly easy to fix.

Considering that your workload incraesed recently, and you are 'working out more' ( i can tell Razz ) It is most probable that you are simply starting to strain a neck muscle somewhere. Especially doing weights and sit-ups etc, if not done correctly, or they are over done, it is very possible that the deep neck muscles over compensate for the weakened/tierd other muscles (chest, arms etc) And as the neck muscles are not designed for strength, but more of a supportive nature, they therefore are at risk of straining.

Without seeing you, and having a prod at your neck, i cant really tell much. You dont strike me to have particularly bad neck posture, so I strongly would think its due to the increased fitness regime. All i would really really say it, (I know its naff) but make sure you really really do stretch your neck out before and after any exercise. (ie. a good 10 second (x2) stretch in all neck movement directons.
As least you are then stopping any muscles getting tight, and unbalanced, which can be the initiator of the pain.

And if you ever feel your neck started to strain doing something, (even if it is not your 'actual' neck pain), they i really would try to avoid doing any more. You dont want to aggitate the problem.

Hope this helps. And you can sort of understand the waffle.

That will be £25 please. Mates rates! Razz

Wink
