Right, I need some advice on this scenario:

Yamaha Thunderace
1996
11,000 miles
Very good condition
Decent price (under £1800)
No old MOTs to show mileage

Would you buy it?

No.

Funny how the owner didn't think of keeping the MOT's on such a "low mileage" bike.

Do a HPI check if you are tempted, but that won't always reveal any wrong doings.

I'd stay clear tbh. Does it even have any service history? Sometimes these can have indicators of mileage.

He says he 'bought it without any because it was in such great condition'.

The fact is, this is the best Thunderace on eBay at the moment, it seems pretty much perfect. Aside from this service history malarky! I'm a bit undecided really. I might just not bid up to the amount I was going to, as it's not got the history. £1600 max. or something.

He is so lying. That's the biggest pile of Nigerian ebay rubbish I have ever heard.

The auction looks ok but I'd go view it first ! HPI Check may well reveal mileage if it's changed hands a few times.

Check over the bike, quite reasonable he may not have the MOT slips himself. If you do a HPI and give the mileage, it /may/ show something in relation to it?

I can't view it first, it's in Glasgow, it'll be a git to get there once, let alone twice. 5 owners, having put 11,700 miles on between them. It's looking less and less likely really.

What might it show on the HPI check?

This is the auction by the way, though Toby found it fine. Laughing

Yeah although he did himself out by not putting Thunderace in the title Smile

When you fill in your V5 there's a box to put the current mileage in that AFAIK gets logged into the DVLA computers.

Beware that this is an optional box, depends how lazy people are.

But an HPI check will pull that up if it's there. Search this forum for cheap hpi check.

As above, but I believe you have to tell the current mileage for the data to be returned.

As much as it pains me to say it, I'm going to leave it alone. It looks like a fantastic bike, but I can't even get the HPI check because he didn't put the numberplate in the auction. It's just too risky. Sad

I don't think it matters, If its obvious the bike is OK and hasn't got signs of being clocked then go for it.

The price obviously reflects the lack of service history. On a Japanese bike its not too much of an issue TBH. As long as it comes up HPI clear then I'd be happy.

Just pay a bit extra to give it a full service when you get it home. Karma

You can pay for Ebay to HPI it, they have the full number plate stored.

Plus you can always ask the seller a question, or buy it and if it comes up with a bad HPI, refuse the item as misdescribed. Karma

I'll have to HPI it if I win it then.

OK, I'm not going to pay over £1600, I'm going to pay for a service, and I'll HPI it and refuse to buy it if anything dodgy comes up. Thumbs Up Karma

I wouldn't buy a Thunderace full stop - I couldn't afford the oil Laughing

Burning oil is a known Thunderace problem - ask Tatters about his custom title Wink

You can check the mileage of the old MOT on the VOSA web site.

You will need either an MOT number or the number on the V5 plus the reg number.

I got it. Smile

Flying up to Glasgow on Tuesday I hope, and riding it back, stopping at my Dads on the way, and arriving back at Keele on Wednesday.

Can't wait, it's going to be quite an experience. Very Happy

I know, that Joe doesn't have a damn clue, I don't think he's even got a Ninja, he hasn't posted in Workshop about his gasket in over a year of owning it! Mr. Green Wink

I'll be asking him about the oil issue, and then I'll be off to Halfords when I get back to get an industrial-sized bottle of it, while I remember, I'm a git for forgetting about oil. Laughing

I still think it was something of a risk buying a bike without a service history, but frankly if you can't take a risk every now and then you're going to lead a pretty boring life. Besides which, if the seller is a decent guy, which remains to be seen (though he's happy to drive a bit out of his way to pick me up from the station) and the bike is as genuine as I hope, I got a brilliant condition, fantastically low mileage bike for a decent price, at pretty much peak season. So results pending, I'm a pretty happy chappy.

Tatters, have you got anything I should keep an eye on? Besides the obvious oil and the exup valve, which I will be questioning him on and hopefully servicing when I get back - luckily I have a Yamaha dealership about 10 minutes away from me, they'll get some business from me in the next few weeks. Smile

By the way, I ended up paying £1700 for it, which was my absolute top whack. I intended to pay a maximum of £1800 for it, a maximum of £1600 when I found out about the service history, and I added an extra £100 because I really, really wanted it. Laughing
