So I had my occasional STD check up yesterday and discovered they no longer do the umbrella test or the cotton bud test.

They do still do the lollipop and push it a lot deeper into your urethra but at least its only once now not 3 times. Dance!

Also if you use the Ambrose King centre at the royal London Chantylle the nurse who does it is a complete babe and you dont have to buy her a drink before she touches your cock. Result. Dance!

My housemate will be happy to hear that after his run in with the old cotton bud a few months ago...

Oh yeah and women do it so more often. Rolling Eyes

Just had a chlamydia test 3/4 weeks ago, all clear. I didn't expect to have anything anyway. Smile

I agree, there's a huge amount of stigma attached to attending a GUM clinic to be tested, and yet it's such an important service. Statistically there are more women who attend the clinics.

I think it's because they are more likely to notice the effects of an STD than a man.

I've heard of said clinic. I just think women are as much to blame as men for getting checked out. Just done a quick survey round the flat, out of 4 girls asked who had ever been tested for STI's only 1 said yes and that was Shell.

2 out of the 3 lads in our flat have been tested.

I don't think you can palm the blame on to lads, when ultimately both sexes are to blame.

Have none of them ever had a smear test then??

It's not necessarily a common thing, but I believe more practices are actually completing checks for Chlamydia, as well as the standard checks for abnormal cell growth which can indicate STDs as well as cervical cancer.

Aye, i'm not sure if they would have had smear tests yet Bella, they are only 18/19, don't females have them later on?

I did have an STD check when I was 17, wasn't too bad. My chlamydia test was only done cause the doc thought it could have been the cause of my excessive urination, it wasn't though. Sad Still no way of knowing what is wrong. Sad

Women must have smear tests between the ages of 25 and 49 but should be having them if they are sexually active.

At the end of the day, it's a free service for both men and women.

The number of people that dont take the wellbeing of themselves not to mention their partner's health seriously enough to put up with a little minor discomfort at the beginning of any sexual relationship seriously disturbs me!

I was only remarking about men as this thread seems to target those forum members with a penis! I believe everyone should start taking the matter a little more seriously!

Can I change this to SHOULD? Smears are a prime example, The amount of women I know that put them off is unbelievable, yet could save the woman's life!

Sorry to ram the whole 'gay' thing into this, but I think it's very relevant.

It really worries me that many of my straight mates (male), have never been to a GUM clinic. They seem to think that being straight and male they are somewhat immune from it all. There's this whole attitude that 'only queers get AIDS'.

Well, sorry to burst the bubble. The number of reported HIV infections has increased amongst the 'straight' community and overtaken that of the 'gay'. (Source: Health Protection Agency.)

I guess that the stigma has stuck in the gay community so hard that almost every gay bar in central London has information available that tackles these issues. Ironically it's normally displayed in the toilets. Very rarely do I see this in straight venues.

Annabella is right, men are less likely to notice the symptoms. But that doesn't mean youre OK. I go every 6 months, or sooner if I think I've been 'at risk'. I really dont see what the issues is for some guys.

PS - I've had a few pints of Stella, so do excuse the poor grammar!

Yeah, well that was gonna happen. Same with us youngun's we have been plagued with such media that a lot of young people take care of themselves much more now.

For example. During freshers week, the Students Union was giving out free home chlamydia testing kits.

A very valid point! Uni students fuck like rabbits... I never went to uni. So I had to find out by researching.

I must admit most straight guys go when something looks like its in danger of falling off.

I keep meaning to get checked up, but i have an allergy to the NHS and appointment booking Sad.

Good intentions get destroyed by them very very quickly.
