Would £9-12 p/h be considered a good wage and would you be able to live comfortably on that much?

Depends on what you'd have to do for it.

It's a brilliant wage for a McJob, a crap one for a contractor.

Whether I could live on it would depend on how many hours as well, probably not at the moment.

At £12 an hour over 40 hours minus tax (25%) then you'd take home £360.....or thats equivalent to £25K a year. Thats the country average and seems a'right. Not brilliant but by no means terrible Thumbs Up

In my previous job, I was being paid £5.55 p/h and my job involved going into work at 2am one wednesday out of 4, at 4am 3 wednesdays out of 4, and 6am every other day of the month. This included sunday.

I was on about £12k a year, and living on my own in a flat. That's the real meaning of "Living on a knife edge!" Laughing

Depends on how many hours, what you are doing, what your living expenses are, and what you consider comfortable.

I've started a job as a floor fitter usually around 35-40 hours a week, just wondering whether or not I should stick out the shitty 'training' period as most of the fitters are on £9-12 p/h it's only £4.45 p/h right now and there work is pretty demanding I must admit.

why's everything so fucking difficult! Evil or Very Mad

Stick at it. They're training you. If you leave you'll only have to work somewhere else for the same money but without any future.

I dont know how long it takes to become a fully trained carpet fitter but if after training they still dont offer you proper money, just ring up rival companies and ask for a proper qualified job.

i agree with cqueen, plus the fact that you can do jobs on the side (our carpet fitter turned up in his 911 (job on side) and he works direct for a firm)

For working nights making aircraft my dad gets £14 an hour, 12 hours shifts. 6 days a week, sat and sunday is £12per hour starting at 3 am and going home at 11.

So my advice is ,work nights you get loads more for the same job ! ( people who do the same job as my dad but in the day get £10 a hour)

simple

I'd want a hell of a lot more than £14 an hour for a 3am start, 12 hour shifts and 6 days a week.

Melatonin shows potential oncostatic activity and is acutely suppressed by light exposure. Some evidence suggests an association between night work and breast cancer risk, possibly through the melatonin pathway. The chances of colon cancer are also increased by night work.

Now you think nights are worthwhile?

Aint so simple working nights though. Can fook up your lifestyle. Think when you're tucking in to bed theres traffic, people getting up for work. basically more noise throughout the day. Then you have the problem of most shops not being open during the night, then weekends can be scrappy getting your sleeping pattern back.
My Dad does like 40 hours night shifts, and hes unbelievably fine with em, goes golfing throughout monday, then goes to work after. Shocked

Hell if you can do it, then work em. Just more conveniant to work days in my opinion Thumbs Up

Jamie, your dad is gonna work himself into an early grave, 12hr shifts, 6 days a week, on nights. Think about it... If you agree tell your dad to change his work pattern - and I'm not taking the piss either, so no need for 'abusive' ratings.
