Right, basically i stay in student accomodation where we cant receive tv (no wall sockets in room). It was a contract term the internet providers stuck in to try and get extra money (from IP tv) from us.

But we all fucked them off basically.

Anyway we are now being hounded about tv licences.

Basically i have no aerial, no want to watch tv and im only in here for another month or so. BUT i do have a tv to watch DVD's and play ps2 on.

By the sounds of the angry letters they intend doing searchs at some point. Which will be nice.

But apparently an installed TV counts as a reciever, and therefore i require a licence. And sadly i dont think menacing whatever muppets turns up will particularly work, nor with these beurocrats will logic and reason.

Therefore, any ideas? Logical, devious or otherwise?

dude, ive lived in halls for 3 years, every year they use these scare tactics to try and get people to buy licences.

luckely if they DO come round to you and nab you, they generally let you buy a licence there and then rather than procecuting you.

very sorry about the spelling. lol

I've been looking into this recently as we have a TV only used for computer/watching videos.

Apparently it's fine, though they won't tell you this, providing your TV / video etc is not tuned into anything - so make sure you can't even get a fuzzy picture on any preset channels.

Haven't got the page to hand, but found it from google.

Just don't let the licencing people into the block. They are not allowed to force entry, no matter what they say, so if they can't come in, it's not an issue. I've had the 'Official Warning' letter as well, it went straight in the bin.

Other than that, don't worry if the tv is not plugged into the ariel.

In our flat, we have a shared TV in the kitchen, therefore the accommodation people must have a licence for that, so all you need to do if you get wind of them coming is detach all of the locks on your individual room doors, it is then classed as being part of the flat and the one TV licence will cover yours. Thumbs Up

They need to provide evidence to the issuing magistrate to support their request for a warrant. Simply not having a licence isn't sufficient evidence.

Knowing the way the criminal justice system works, they probably consider not having a TV licence a worse offence than robbery, rape or murder! It wouldn't surprise me if they handed warrants out like sweets.

My friends neighbour is the only person I know who actually doesnt own a TV. He gets letters all the time, very threatening they are too.

He just used to put a load of junkmail in the return envelopes with a little note that said 'Your days are numbered'.

He gets the search and warrant rubbish at least twice a year, nothings ever happened! Thumbs Up

When they do come round to halls, they are usually all too aware that word soon gets around, and all evidence of TV-related naughtiness will have disappeared by the time they have knocked on 3 doors in the first block.

They can't force entry, you aren't obliged to let them in, having a TV with no aerial socket and no separate aerial is hardly an 'installed TV' in the true meaning of the term anyway, and ignore the fact that they caution you - they are trying to sound like coppers to be more intimidating, their word/evidence counts for no more than yours.

As said above you don't need one, but where you may get tripped up is if you're out and another flat member lets them in. If you don't know the law it's fairly likely they'll try to take advantage of whoever lets them in, so make sure everyone knows the score.

Whomever opens the door will be the person who gets done.

If your in halls they should need a warrent for each room, as long as the rooms are numbered, as each room is classed as a different address.

Face it, they won't turn up to a block of student halls with 100 warrents. If they do, just move TV's into a room they have searched!

In practice it's likely they'll also get some other 'innocent's' done, had it happen in a shared house.

But the TV licence is there to cover you owning receiving equipment. If you choose to not use it to receive TV then that is your choice, you still have to have a licence to own it though.

I think the only way is to have a monitor only and no way of receiving TV at all, eg, no tuner in a video etc etc.

That is what they tell you, but not /actually/ the law apparently (according to various stuff I found on google.)

I wouldn't worry, they've been treatening thelma over the road for 4 years that she has no license and they're ocming to get her...

thelma died 4.5years ago Rolling Eyes

my flat mates rang the numbe ron the letter to say he had no TV, they said okay, then continue to hound him and the rest of us.

I want a TV to play N64 one etc.. but cant because it counts as a receiver Rolling Eyes

if I can hide a 2ft fish tank from landlady I'm sure I could hide a little telly from them, mayb? big fine if I'm busted though Neutral
