Hi all,
Well I had the day from hell today. I found out this morning that I had a job interview at another school (I am a teacher) so this morning I went into work and told my boss (headteacher) that I had an interveiw on tuesday at the other school.
My boss was REALLY horrible to me, very nasty she was angry with me because I had not told her in advance that I was going for another job and was basically F****ed off that the other school had already contacted her for references the day before (even before I new I had an interview) and that was the first she new of it.

Anyway it made me really upset the way I was treated so much so that i cried when i left the room which i have never done at work before.
I have worked there for 4 years and have never been in trouble or done anything wrong before.

my question is this - do you tell your boss that you are applying for another job even if you have no idea that you will even get an interview?

I thought that there was not point in "rocking the boat" at work untill you did have an interview etc am i wrong in thinking this

anyway its left me feeling very much under pressure and feeling awful about my job interview next week

I wouldn't I'd go out and start looking for jobs, and I'd wait till I was sure I was going to get another job before I told my boss. Just don't see the point in creating a fuss if I'm going to change my mind later on.

Don't tell them 'Jack' untill you've been offered the new job.

Never tell your employer you are looking for another job!

At best it looks like you have a lack of commitment to your current job, at worst it looks like you may be trying to 'hold them to ransom'.

Wait until you have a definite job offer, then tell your current employers . Re-reading your post, it would seem your potential new employers have made the error in asking for references before they are required. Obviously this will cause friction at your work, you just need to ignore the reactions of people you are currently working for/with.

Hope your interview goes well Thumbs Up

The other company are in the wrong, its definitely not the norm to contact someones employer for references when an interview hasn't even been arranged. References are commonly one of the last things to be looked at IMO, after the job offer has been accepted

Sorry couldn't resist.. Wink

But as has been said, I find it very surprising the other place asked for references before you've even been interviewed?
Maybe it's different in education?

yes it does seem to be different in education. For some reason they do seem to send for references early as soon as they send for interview. mind you in teaching jobs they tend to make the job offer in the same day u have the interview and expect you to say yes to the job there and then!!

That said. It is common courtesy to ask someone before you name them as a referee. It would piss me off if I got a request for a reference out of the blue.

It might be someone I didn't feel I could honestly give a good reference for. Under those circumstances I would ask them not to put me as a referee to save them the embarassment of me declining to give a reference to a potential employer.

It can be worth putting 'referees on request', which I believe is acceptable.
I wouldn't be telling my boss (well, I would, he'd probably offer me some tips as he's not a big fan of the company at the mo Smile ) and would just request a day off for other reasons.

Hopefully that they've already checked your references might be a good sign, although how good a one you'll have got is another matter Confused.

The last but one company I worked for forbade us from using anyone other than the HR dept as reference from that company.
It simply consisted of "Yes this person worked here from a to b" etc

I was team leader for a while and told them to F off, and I would happily give anyone a reference if they requested...
I since got made redundant... Smile

Although seeing as you're not allowed to give a bad reference, I probably wouldn't want someone who I thought was useless to put me down as referee either.

Whilst you can't give a bad reference, you can decline to provide one.

Most job applications (particularly those online) now have a box that you can tick to state you do not wish for the referee to be contacted prior to interview.

Good luck with the interview - sounds like you need a change of scene!

Its treesey200 ......

Well I found out that my boss had also treated another female member of staff very badly last week for the very same reason. You see the school we work in is due to close down in 2 years time. There is a new school due to be opened to replace it but there has been no mention by the local authority if our jobs are safe. Many people are very upset and over the past few weeks have started to jump ship I think the head is worried because her empire is cracking!

Jobs in education are very different from jobs in industry. School always tend to want references before they even interview the candidate, it is just something that is done within the profession.

My concern is should you tell your employer that you are applying for jobs even before you are sure of getting an interview? I have had very conflicting advice from people in education and in other industries.

The thing that made me so upset yesterday when writing the post was the way that I was spoken to by my employer I may have made a mistake not telling her about the job but my record up until that point was excellent, I am very good at my job. As a professional and as an employer there are ways to speak to people and she was aggressive, rude and bullying.

It really annoyed me when, in my old job, I'd been for an interview and the cheeky buggers called my workplace asking to speak to one of my referees (even though I'd decided I didn't want the job should they offer it to me). Luckily, I answered the call and was able to tell them to piss off, and that they had no right to call my workplace like that.

I personally think that you shouldn't tell your employer you're going for an interview, and you certainly shouldn't tell them you're looking for new jobs or applying. It's got nothing to do with them! You're entitled to window shop (in fact, it's good to go to interviews just for the practice and so you don't get complacent) and see what's around, especially given your situation.

Never ever ever ever , you get the point tell them about it ,

always ask in interviews or in application to have references contacted after offer and acceptance,

you'd be surprised how mean and spiteful people can be , one of my 50YO bosses was really childish about it.
