Hello,

Just taken out a new policy on one of our cars. My dad has been a named driver on my mums policy for basically all his life, and the insurance company wants him to prove it. So they have asked us to send the last five insurance policy certificates as proof.
How easy is it to actually get the previous insurance companies to send our old insurance certificates? Do they have any legal obligation to provide them at all?

Many thanks
LS

Companies must keep details for their own records. Five years sounds about right, although it does depend on the information.

As it has your information then you can request it. However, they may charge an administration fee for the service.

If they do charge a fee best bet is to beg and see if they'll waive it 'just this one time' you understand. Point out that you could return to using that insurance company in the future if they're so helpful (however most call centre operators work to a script and couldn't be bothered about repeat business. If so ask to talk to a supervisor or phone the head office direct).

HTH Thumbs Up
