Does anyone own or has anyone owned a Suzuki GS550 custom?

I want to buy an older bike which I can customize ie café racer / chopper, and wondered whether this was be a suitable base to start with.

Strongest inline 4 the Japanese have come up with. The downside is a bit heavy and ponderous for the power output (50 bhp ish). There are worse bikes to start from, although beware electrical faults and general rot at this age.

I’m not too bothered about electrics or rot as I’ll probably end up chopping the frame about and losing most of the electrics anyway. the bike I’m looking at is early 80’s so will need a sand blast and powder coat at the least

Ok cool. As long as your not into going crazy fast then I can't forsee any probs. The engines are bomb proof as long as they havn't been run out of oil (and they are more resistant to that than most!).
